Photograph album of Edgar Kain in England 1940

Date: 1940 - [ca 1924-1925]

From: Kain family: Papers and photographs relating to the life and career of Edgar James 'Cobber' Kain

Reference: PA1-o-1953

Description: Photograph album containing photographs mostly taken by newspaper or British official photographers, mainly of Edgar Kain in England on leave in April 1940, and some also taken after his death. The album is captioned on the inside front cover "Eddie in England 1940" and the first eight photographs show Kain on leave at his fiancee's family home in Chester, England; they are also captioned, possibly by his sister or mother. Other photographs include Kain with New Zealand High Commissioner W J Jordan and with Mrs Jordan at a reception, one of his mother with Jordan, showing Kain's Distinguished Flying Cross that she received from King George VI, and one of his sister Judith and fiancee Joyce Phillips. The latter two photographs date from after Kain's death. The photographs of Kain with Jordan and his mother with Jordan have typed captions that are possibly press releases to accompany the photographs. There is also a photograph of the Kain family taken possibly in 1924 or 1925, when Edgar was about five years old. Several of the photographs are stamped on the back "Daily Express" or "This photograph may not be reproduced without official permit". The donor has provided names for the people in the photograph of the Kain family and for the photograph of Judith Kain and Joyce Phillips, and acid-free insertions in the album provide this information. Title supplied by Library Quantity: 1 album(s) containing 14 b&w original photographic prints. Physical Description: Light brown cardboard-covered album, 26 x 21.5 cm, fastened with light brown cord. Provenance: Donated by Kain's niece, Diana Pickard, Wellington, May, 2016 Processing information: Because the photographs are affixed to the album pages, not all have been examined for inscriptions on the back.
