Description: View looking east from above Tasman Street, Wellington, across the Basin Reserve toward Mount Victoria. On the far right is Wellington College, with St Mark's Church and schoolroom to the left of this. The Caledonian Hotel is visible on the corner of Adelaide Road and Rugby Street. Smoke is rising from a residence in the foreground. Early plantations of pines can be seen around the Basin Reserve and behind Wellington College (both early 1870s), and on Mount Victoria between Pire and Ellis Streets (planted 1880). Taken by an unidentified photographer, circa 1900. Source of descriptive information - In 2008, David Lloyd identified the two storied house with ground floor bay windows (left foreground) as 23 Tasman Street, which is the Tasman Street veterinary centre. This use of the building dates from 1962. The buildings to the left and behind the two storied house, have been demolished. This area is now the site of the Te Awhina Apartments and the Seventh Day Adventist Church car park.
