Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Topographic and cadastral map of Clifton, Pahiatua from the Pahiatua Railway Station to the Mangatainoka Railway Station, Mangatainoka Central Road and Main Road. A reference key refers to tenure of freehold and leasehold land, also acreages of sections and paddocks. Additional pencilled notes in some freehold sections include a number for each section and the acreage. Notes in the reference key state that the leasehold land is comprised of Education Reserve and Wellington Corporation Reserve with references to improvement clauses. Includes the road and railway line towards Woodville, and the site of a railway crossing. Bridges are shown on the Mangatainoka River. Includes butter factories, a school, hotel, post offfice, Bank of New South Wales, Bank of New Zealand, and sale yards, yards and dip. The direction towards Mangahao and Palmerston is given, also to Balance. Includes two sections of leasehold land on the road to Makuri, adjacent to Main Road. Sites of some homesteads are given and owners' names are: Walker, Marsh, Page, Lloyd, C. Beetham, Abraham and Williams. The enlargement is of part of the two sections on the road to Makuri, adjacent to Main Road, showing the sites of farm buildings. The note 'Plan of homestead' is written across the enlargement, but buildings listed are: dwelling, wash-house, wood and fowl shed, tool and trap shed, hay shed, bull shed, also the woolshed - cow shed - stable. Title of the enlargement supplied by cataloguer and is a combination of information taken from a pencilled note on bottom right which states: Mr. C. Beetham's 1046 acres, Pahiatua, and the subject of the enlarged map. Quantity: 2 manuscript map(s) on one sheet.
