Description: Letter from Hamuera Pakaiahi to William Colenso addressed "Ki te Kopi Kia te Koreneho Minita", dated "Okotopa 17 1847" writing from Hurunuiorangi in the Wairarapa. He says he cannot go to Te Kopi, as he is too busy with "mahi oranga". Also mentions the surveying of land in the Remutaka area, and that Te Aukarere was going to hunt birds. Tamati is also mentioned, saying he will take food to the Pākehā. Native school attendance books

Description: Attendance rolls generally kept by native school teachers, though there is evidence of William Colenso's hand in some of them. Earliest register (1844) is for the school at Waimate, Northland; the remaining books relate to schools in the Wairarapa district. It is noteworthy that both Mohi Torohanga and Paratene Te Okawhare are listed as pupils at the schools; they are the source of the text scribed by Te Whatahoro and subsequently used by S P Smith in writing about Maori cosmology and origins (See JPS 103 no 2); other notable pupils include Te Horo and Paora Te Potangaroa who both established prophetic movements (see Elsmore, B 1989 Mana from Heaven) There is a note on one of the books in Elsdon Best's hand. Description: Buildings shown are the whaling station at Te Kopi, Palliser Bay. See similar view, with title, reproduced in McArthur's auction catalogue for sale 4 August 1987, lot 52. Shows a high rock, being climbed by three Pakeha men, on the right, a cluster of several low buildings near the shore and a path through low scrub in the foreground. A Maori woman [?] is walking away from the viewer and further along the path is a European man and another person. Date of 1844 is suggested because Brees' watercolour entitled Cape Palliser is dated 1844, and this view is likely to have been taken on the same exploratory trip. Description: Watercolour shows the south Wairarapa coast, possibly near Te Kopi looking west from near Cape Palliser, with dwellings and probably a whaling station (Wades Whaling Station? as mentioned in the Wellington Spectator of 1844 - quoted in Mita Carter's "Early Palliser Bay" (1982)) in the centre. Several men stand on the steep hillside at the right. The foreground terrain is covered with low scrub. Entitled "Whaling station, Palliser Bay, Wairarapa" in McArthur's August 1987 auction catalogue. Dated from other views of the same area. Other Titles - Whaling station, Palliser Bay, Wairarapa Similar to watercolour at B-031-025. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
