Description: Photographs, chiefly of the Wellington area, probably taken by Frank J Denton. A number show the house `Fernhill' in Woolcombe Street (now part of The Terrace), Wellington, views from the house and its gardens. Portraits in clude Laurie Denton, Tom Tolley (locksmith), Alfred Bennett and his family, Mrs Denton Snr, Mrs Waters (had a grocery shop in Dixon Street), G L Adkin (as a boy), Miss Dixon (of the aerated water family, the Dixons of Dixon Street), George Butler (artist), and Beaglehole (David Ernest Beaglehole, father of Professor Ernest Beaglehole, and Professor John Cawte Beaglehole). Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: Album of South Island scenes (except for a few taken en route to Wellington showing The Brothers, Pencarrow Head, and one of a group having a picnic at Muritai). Probably mostly photographed by George William Barltrop. The first section shows the Nelson and Marlborough areas, and several photographs of ships at sea, one shipwreck (the Antiocco Accame in 1901), and one aground (the Elginshire, 1902). People who are identified are: the Reverend Bennett (Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with his first wife Hana Te Unuhi Mere Bennett, and young daughter, Rawinia Bennett (circa 1900); Abe Wells, photographed as an older man outside his cob house at Richmond (circa 1890s); and Isla Reid, photographed as a young girl, probably in the Dunedin area. Three scenes in cemeteries have clearly identified headstones, and include those for the Reverend Samuel Poole, Frank Churchill Simmons; and a group memorial for Charlotte McDonald, Annie McQuaid and Lizzie Crinrod, stewardesses who were drowned in the wreck of the SS Wairarapa, Great Barrier Island, 29th October 1894. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai.
