Description: Photograph album of images taken and collected by Peter Henry Rothschild during his time in Japan serving as part of the J Force, 1947 to circa 1949. Most images are captioned, and some pages are labelled with the name of the place in which they were taken and a date, possibly the date at which Rothschild arrived in the location. There are several photographs of Rothschild, alone or in group photographs. Photographs include pictures of Japanese people, buildings, street scenes, shrines, landscape views, soldiers' quarters, soldiers relaxing, 3rd Battalion camp in Yamaguchi, C Company 3rd Battalion at Christmas dinner at Yamaguchi, Japanese New Year celebrations, and a tea ceremony. Includes scenes from travel to Japan - packing up at Papakura Camp; Suva, Fiji; and on board the 'Dunera', including a 'crossing the line' ceremony. Images of Chofu from 1947 include pictures of the 'great fire' of October 1947 and aftermath (the fire destroyed over 700 buildings). Images from Kogushi, where Rothschild was with A Company 2nd Battalion, include views of the men's quarters and a view of the camp from the sea. Aio Beach (Yamaguchi Prefecture) images include photographs taken to make a "progression panorama" of the beach and surrounding landscape. Many photographs taken in Kobe feature members of the Kobe Jewish community and other servicemen celebrating Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. There are also several commercial black and white and coloured prints of buildings in Kobe. There are also commercial photographs of Osaka Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle, and Brigade Headquarters at Chofu. Other places featured are Osaka, Yamada, Mikimoto Pearl Farm, the Kiwi Club at Yuda, Iwashimizu Hachimangū Shrine in Yamada, Kawana Hotel (a leave centre for the British Commonwealth Occupation Force), and Ōta. Series 6393 may hold negatives that correspond to prints from this album. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 album(s) with 313 photographic prints, nine hand-coloured. Physical Description: Album, 26.5 x 36.5 cm, with textured blue cloth cover, gold embossed with fairy seated on moon blowing a trumpet, and the word "Photographs". Tied with green cord.
