Description: A rocky headland and an island showing a pierced rock. There is currently no island with a pierced rock close to Miramar Peninsula. It is possible that the 1856 earthquake raised the land between the Peninsula and the island and that it is now part of the shoreline on the east side, where there are several large rock formations. Description: The entrance from Evans Bay, Wellington Harbour, to the tunnel built by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water, a lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula. The entrance to the tunnel is cut into a cliff and supporting beams are built around the opening. A small hut stands to the right of the tunnel and a path winds over the hill-top to the right. Rocks, flax bushes and a small cabbage tree are distinguishable in the foreground and there is a small rowboat tied to a stake at the water's edge, in the centre foreground. Hataitai or Whataitai was the earlier name for Miramar Peninsula The preliminary sketch for this sepia watercolour is a pencil work held at A-229-023, with an almost identical title. Description: View from the south end of Evans' Bay, (close to the site of today's airport) looking along Miramar Peninsula, past a small hut and the entrance to the tunnel dug by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water (a former lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula), along steep cliffs to the north. There is almost no beach below the cliffs, since the beach area was lifted by the 1856 earthquake. The hills of Roseneath and of Wadestown and Ngaio are visible in the distance. Description: A view from the south end of Evans Bay looking north up the bay. To the right is part of Miramar Peninsula, with a hut and the mouth and exit structure of the tunnel built by the artist to drain the shallow lake at the lowest point of Miramar Peninsula. There are 3 small rowboats or canoes on the still water, and a further rowboat is pulled up on the shore to the right, in the middle distance. In the distance on the left are the hills of Roseneath and those to the west of the harbour (Khandallah) in the far distance. Glendavar was J C Crawford's cattle farm at the North end of Burnham water. The tunnel was cut by Mr Crawford to drain Burnham water into Evans Bay, and was the first tunnel made in N.Z. Description: Alfred Saunders born at Point Halswell, Wellington 1911. Recalls his father was an artilleryman in the army, stationed at the Point to look after the large gun there. Talks about growing up on the Miramar Peninsula, Fort Ballance and other forts around the harbour. Also talks about period when father left the army and they moved to Whangaroa where his father took up crayfishing. Recalls leaving school at the age of 15 years and commencing an apprenticeship as a shipwright with B J L Jukes Ltd, a boatbuilder in Balena Bay, Wellington. Describes his duties as an apprentice and explains that many of the boats worked on at the yard belonged to Island Bay and Eastbourne fishermen. Mentions living at Paraparaumu where he built a 40 foot fishing vessel called `May' for a Mr Buckland at Plimmerton during the Great Depression. Refers to his work during World War II, describing some of the vessels he worked on which were commandeered by the navy. After the war went fishing from Paremata and details type of fishing and fish caught. Describes location of his boat yard at Paremata foreshore where he built a number of fishing and pleasure craft. Talks about the Sea Reaper, a vessel of 50 feet in length that he built and operated with his sons during the 1960s. Talks about the crayfish boom at the Chathams and the big demand for vessels. Mentions some of the problems encountered with the Marine Department surveyors and the modern fishing regulations. Talks about son, Harold, who has a boatbuilding business in Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds.
