Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal". Mountain huts and mountaineering in the Southern Alps

Description: Snapshots of mountaineering, camping, and several unidentified mountain huts in the Southern Alps taken by unidentified photographers. The groups are probably members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and/or the New Zealand Alpine Club. Many of the scenes show men transporting building equipment (some with the use of vehicles and horses), then carried by the men across stoney river beds, fording rivers, climbing with planks on their backs, then showing the various stages of construction. One hut has a rounded roof-line; others made of corrugated iron and wood are situated at different sites, including one up a bare mountain-side, and one with trees behind, and another with a river in front. The collection includes several interior views of huts (nos. 130-134), and close-up pictures of the men. Names pencilled on the back of some of the photographs include F. Hulston, D.V. Apperley, W. Newton, G. Chisholm, M. Barford, John Sampson, J. Moore and R. Drake. Image no. 175 shows the tombstone of Minnie Cochran with the inscription "In memory of Minnie Cochran, d 27th Oct. 1879 and Baby" which was found "nestling under the hawthorn fence by the cattle yards at Mt White". Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass.
