Description: Photographs from three expeditions in the Homer area, between the Upper Hollyford Valley and the Cleddau Valley, December 1943-January 1944; December 1944-January 1945; and the Homer Tunnel Museum Expedition in February 1946, all taken by John Tenison Salmon. Many of the photographs are landscapes, but others show native plants growing in the area. Two sequences show the damage caused by avalanches, one showing damage to bush and to a bridge in 1944; the others show damage from a major avalanche which buried the eastern portal of the Homer Tunnel which was under construction at the time (September 1945). Description: Scenic photographs of New Zealand taken by R.H. Bartlett, photographer who was working in Auckland circa 1875 to 1880. At the beginning of the album there is a fold-out page, opening into four full-sized photographs. Most of the images are of North Island scenes, including some of Maori groups outside whare, meeting houses, and a school with thatched walls and roof, and a view of the Maori pa at Ohinemutu. Most of the other views are landscapes, including the Pink and White Terraces, the Whangarei and Waitakere waterfalls; and hot springs at Lake Rotomahana, the Champagne Fountain at Wairakei, and the Crows Nest geyser at Taupo. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows Milford Sound, including views from a launch, an aerial view, Harrison Cove, Bowen Falls, Mitre Peak and a view from the Milford Sound airstrip. The last two images show the Rimutaka hill Road, and Waiwera. The slides are not filed in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Shows the paddle steamer Luna in a bay in Milford Sound, with a hanging valley in the background. The snow-capped mountain beyond the hanging valley formed by Harrison's Cove, is Mount Pembroke. Michael Fitzgerald of the National Museum (later Te Papa) identified the paddle steamer as the Luna, on which Heaphy went to Milford Sound in 1874.
