Papakura became part of a larger area. The implication of the cartoon may be that the amalgamation allowed cost-cutting which would contribute towards funds for the purchase of the frigates. Description: Interview with Doug (Douglas) Curtis, born in Hastings in 1919. Recalls joining the Air Force in August 1939 and being sent to Levin and then to Hobsonville where he learnt to pack parachutes and to repair fabric work on aircraft. Refers to being sent to Ohakea and then to Nadi Base, Fiji in November 1940, which was then just a flat field with no runway, hangars or barracks. Mentions the base had Repeater and Tiger Moth aircraft, which had to be sheltered in dugouts during hurricanes. Comments the Repeaters were used for surveillance, and that they had more De Havilland four engine planes after the hurricanes. Mentions his term of duty was extended to 2 1/2 years, with the number of planes at the base climbing to seventy. Refers to an American base being built nearby, and American planes refuelling en route to Australia. Comments on guarding the runway at Nadi and threatening to shoot Americans who cut across it. Talks about the Americans being very lenient with equipment. Discusses being in Fiji when Singapore fell, and having been sent to Singapore in a Flying Boat. Comments on the monotony of base life, coral poisoning, and sugar trains. Recalls catching buses, Indian shops, walking into the bush, and being taken to Fijian villages. Talks about returning to New Zealand by sea in April 1943 and going back to Hastings until he was sent to Onerahi and then to Hobsonville where he saw WAFs for the first time. Refers to supervising five women who packed parachutes and repaired fabric. Mentions attending a safety equipment course in Nelson and then looking after safety equipment at Hobsonville. Comments on how he found out the war was over, having leave, and marrying three days later. Description: Interview with Florence May (Maisie) Takle (nee Younger), born Taumarunui, 23 July 1920. Talks about her mother's French family history, and her father's Scottish background. Briefly describes her education, leaving school at 13, working as a machinist, and marrying Ken Younger in 1940 before he was sent overseas. Refers to joining the Red Cross VAD (Volunteer Aid Detachment) and being posted to a military annex attached to Auckland Hospital at Ellerslie racecourse. Talks about enlisting in the Air Force in 1941, being sent to Rotorua, posted to Rongotai base as a nurse, and later to Hobsonville. Discusses the uniform, sharing accommodation, ward duties, leave and not being allowed to wear her wedding ring. Refers to the tensions between American troops and New Zealand servicemen. Recalls air raid drills at Hobsonville, and checking medical kits on aircraft. Mentions not having much contact with other WAAFs apart from ambulance drivers. Describes leaving the Air Force once she heard unofficially that her husband was on his way home. Description: Unbound photograph album and pages comprises photographs of hydroelectric power and electricity transmission, probably taken by Laurence Earle from 1926 to1928. Photographs are mainly of completed and under construction work for hydroelectric dams and electricity pylons (known at the time as 'towers').The album also contains photographs of powerhouses around the North Island, scenic images taken on location, and worker's campsites. Images of fieldwork include in-construction and erection of electricity towers at Hobsonville, East Tamaki, Greenhithe, Penrose-Takapuna, Panmure and Bombay; as well as cabling installation, bullock teams, survey equipment, construction equipment and dredging machinery. Hydroelectric dam images feature pipelines, dam spillways, dam walls and turbines. Photographs with interior and/or exterior views of powerhouses include the Waikaremoana power scheme, the Arapuni Dam, and Penrose substation. Scenic landscape views include Rangiriri swamp, Waihi, Waiau river and gorge, Mangaore and Poutere lake. Most photographs have accompanying caption inscriptions, ranging from 1926 to 1928, which describe locations, structures, campsites, and bridges. Some photographs feature workers at campsites, or working on tower construction and/or undertaking fieldwork. Photocopy of Mangahao dam diversion tunnels scheme, which accompanied the album on arrival, held in Photographic Archive backfile. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: The album pages have been kept in their original order by the archivist.
