Description: A single-storey house surrounded by a fence, with a shed or further house beyond it, a conical hill and other foothills of the Southern Alps in the near background. A figure with a pole over one shoulder walks along a path to the right towards the house. The house is surrounded by cultivated fields. Another building and possibly a haystack are to the right. Arowhenua is close to modern Temuka, South Canterbury, on the Opihi River. Tarahaoa is the Maori name for Mount Peel, possibly the conical hill behind the house. Mount Peel is some 40 km distant from Arowhenua and appears closer in this view than the location of modern Arowhenua would suggest. Chatham Islands album

Description: Album chiefly shows members of a Lands & Survey team surveying boundaries etc, in the Chatham Islands, and in South Canterbury, circa 1938. Residents of the Chatham Islands, various locations in the islands and activities such as sheep transportation from the islands to Lyttelton and Wellington by ship are shown. Another sequence shows drainage and irrigation procedures in South Canterbury. The photographer is probably Russell Gladstone Dick, later the New Zealand Surveyor-General. Other - Source of descriptive information - Card inserted in album which reads "Ample evidence this is a 1938 Lands and Surveys team surveying boundaries etc ... Description: Shows views of Maori buildings in Papawai and Te Ore Ore (Masterton area), the homesteads of A. Hutt and A. Hawdon at Underwood (possibly Port Underwood), Picton, Wanganui, Canterbury Plains (including Mt Peel, Rangitata), Feilding (including Lord Ranfurly's arrival there), Wairarapa, Levin (a Maori house), W. Maunsel's house in Masterton, the home of H. Nixon at Sedgebrook, and the Church Mission house at Waimate (Bay of Islands). This last is by Richard Taylor (Mary Medley's father), as is a view of St Sampson Church, Guernsey. At the back are loose sketches with copies of Edward Lear's illustrated limericks.
