Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Photographs taken by A G Jackson (and possibly also by his companions on the trip - H.A.F Jackson and J Alexander) in 1887 on a penny-farthing cycle trip from Christchurch to the West Coast, have been added to an existing album of commercial photographs of yachting on The Solent, England. Scenes in Australia include Adelaide waterworks, Currency Creek, the Murray River Bridge, the Thorndon Park Reservoir, and Port Adelaide River road & rail bridge. New Zealand scenes are chiefly in the South island, many relating to early railway construction, particularly areas involved in working on the Dunedin to Balclutha railway along the Waimakariri River, and around the Purakanui Cliffs. Of particular interest throughout the album are the construction and design of railway features such as bridges, viaducts and tunnels. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang".
