Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s, chiefly by George Valentine, and Charles Spencer, both of whom visited Mount Tarawera before and after the eruption of June 1886. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the album are images cut from the paper "Newsview", June 1949, showing historic photographs of the eruption, and another double-page from the Weekly News (June 6, 1951) on the "65th Anniversary of the Mount Tarawera catastrophe". The latter article notes that mud, estimated at 75 ft in depth, covered a vast area. The album includes images taken before the eruption, and shows the same areas irreparable damaged. Many show the Pink and White Terraces, the village of Te Wairoa, and the massive rift in the mountain; also a group led by Sir James Hector to study the aftermath and changes wrought by the eruption. Description: An album containing prints relating to the Rotorua District and Maori tourism in particular. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1903, except for one image taken by Josiah Martin in 1890. Many of the images have short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects, including: - The whare whakairo (carved meeting house) Tokanganui-a-noho with a sign 'Ko Rawaho' for the ancestor Rawharo at Te Kuiti. - Games of bowls being played on the green at the Government Gardens, Rotorua, showing the band rotunda in the background. - Whare at Te Ngae pa, with Maori families sitting and standing outside, including a woman weaving baskets. - Mud pools and steam vents at Tikitere (Hell's Gate) and Whakarewarewa. Also the Wairoa geyser hole at Whakarewarewa being "soaped", with tourists looking on, and subsequently spouting. - The bush-lined Kaituna River and the Okere Falls, including a flume for a hydroelectric plant servicing Rotorua. - A small motor launch pulled up on the shore of Lake Rotoiti, with tourists aboard and Maori captain. - Scenes at Whakarewarewa village, including children penny diving from bridge and bathing in hot pools, kettles and kete (baskets) for cooking, and views of houses. Also images of the whare whakairo Rauru, one with Sophia Hinerangi and a man who may be Mita Taupopoki outside; and another with the caption "Sold to Berlin - 1904". Also portraits of Sophia and Bella Papakura. - Scenes at Ohinemutu, including interior and exterior shots of the whare whakairo Tamatekapua, bust of Queen Victoria with St Faith's Church beyond, children bathing, and a woman named Merepaea Paea washing clothes. - A waka taua (war canoe) being paddled on Lake Rotorua and shots of canoes being manoeuvred over obstacles in races. - Broad views of Waimangu valley with steam rising from vents, Lake Rotomahana with Mt Tarawera beyond, and the inlet on Lake Tarawera below Te Wairoa. Mud from the 1886 Tarawera eruption is still visible. - Hangi (earth oven) being prepared. - Men performing a haka near Whakarewarewa (this image taken by Josiah Martin). Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai.
