Cundy album

Description: Photograph album of West Coast scenes, compiled, and in part photographed by surveyor George John Roberts. Several images show Roberts, including one image of him with L Cockayne and C E Douglas standing on ice at the Bealey in April 1897. Physical Description: Black bound album with cream cotton spine, entitled "Photographs", 26 x 32 cm Provenance: Donated by Mr H G Cundy, Palmerston North, 1977. The album was compiled by surveyor George Roberts, uncle of Mr Cundy.

Description: Album of photographs relating to mountains and mountaineering in the Southern Alps. A photograph of George John Roberts, Charles Edward Douglas, and Leonard Cockayne (p 1), was probably taken by George Roberts' wife, who took one of the group at the same time but in different positions (See image at PAColl-5926-13) C H Stonor is seen with "Dr Teichmann" [i.e. Ebenezer Teichelmann] (p 40). Two photographs at the end of the album are of Tasmania, one showing a bush scene with a small waterfall; and one taken by John Watt Beattie of Hobart from the bay. All the inscriptions in the album are hand-written with decorative lettering and patterning. Inscriptions: Album page - W. Stoner, Llanvair, Coronation Rd, South Ascot. Rev. Description: Photographs of mountaineering, mountain views and mountain huts in the Southern Alps taken by W D Frazer (engine driver, mountaineer and photographer in Otira). A number of unidentified people are seen, who may be linked to the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. Most locations are identified in ink or pencil on verso of photographs. Broken numbering sequence by the photographer appears on some of the images. (Where the photographer's number has been given it is added in brackets after the subject in next paragraph). Description: Alpine views, probably taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, circa 1890s to 1900s. Many of the places shown are listed above. The photographs are separated into 10 sequences: 1: From Bismarck Peak (nos. 1-6). 2: From Spenser [i.e. Mount Spencer] (nos. 7-13). 3: Odd [i.e. From] Chancellor Ridge (nos. 14-27). 4: La Perouse Icefall from lower glacier (nos. 28-33). 5: Victoria Falls (nos. 34-36). 6: From Victoria Range (nos. 37-44). 7: Copland Pass & Valley (nos. 45-53). 8: Tasman Glacier floor (nos. 54-60). 9: From Malcolm Peak (nos. 61-72). 10: Pan[orama] of 3 from Chancellor Ridge (nos. 73-75). Many of the scenes show different angles of the main divide between Canterbury and Westland, including views of from Bismarck Peak (Glacier Peak to Pioneer Pass) looking along the Fritz Range; the divide from the Minarets to Conway; Pioneer Pass to Tasman; head of Franz Josef Glacier; Spenser [i.e. Mount Spencer], Conway and Malte Brun. Views from the Tasman Glacier floor include Mounts Lendenfeld, Haast and Hardinger; Mount Cook; Ball Glacier. Views from Malcolm Peak include southwards along the divide, and southerly views of the Rakaia, Rangitata, Lambert and Lord Rivers; northerly, north easterly, southerly and south westerly views; the Lyell Glacier and Mt Arrowsmith; Mount Cook; Mount Tyndall. The final three images are a three part panorama taken from Chancellor Ridge of the divide (Conway to Haast), Tasman etc. and part of Fox Range across Fox Icefall, and part of the Fox Range as seen across the Fox Icefall.
