He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Description: Interview with Bruce Alan Corlett born Palmerston North, 26 April 1962. Mentions his father Selwyn and mother Marlene are both still living on the family farm. Refers to marrying his wife Debbie and their two children Melissa and Nathan, and mentions that he will not encourage his son to follow him in the business. Describes how his grandfather began the dairy farm in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Discusses how he decided to continue the family farm with more intensive land use, although some dairying continued until his father retired. Outlines building glasshouses and growing tomatoes, and discusses heating the glasshouses to extend the growing season. Mentions gradual deterioration of the soil in the glasshouses and trying other culture media, eventually using hydroponics. Describes growing other crops outside, and propagating their own seedlings. Discusses switching from tomatoes to growing lettuce hydroponically year-round. Refers to packaging and transport of produce, and pest control. Outlines the long hours he worked, especially in the early days of growing. Discusses the Otaki District Commercial Gardeners Society and mentions that it has now declined in importance.
