Description: Interview with Emlyn (Tim) Barnes, born in England in 1933. Discusses doing a shipwright's apprenticeship and later working in the merchant navy as a ship's carpenter. Refers to emigrating to New Zealand after several visits, living first in Napier and Wellington before settling in Picton. Mentions working as a boatbuilder and farm labourer until he was invited by Athol Perano (first mate) to crew on the Orca where he worked for two years. Talks about the boat, its crew, catching whales, and towing them inshore. Comments on not having much contact with workers in the whaling station factory, which was a dangerous place to work. Recalls that the Orca developed a boiler problem which ended its days at sea. Discusses his feelings about whaling. Mentions working later as a builder and boatbuilder and working on the waterfront. Description: Opens with Queenstown and Dunedin, and closes with the SS Rotorua in George Sound and Mitre Peak, Milford Sound. But most of the rest of the album relates to the Auckland region. There is a strong emphasis on Piha its coastal features like Lion Rock, and on groups of mainly men who went there on camping, hunting and fishing weekends or holidays. There is also one image of a group of surveyors and their camp at Piha dated 1894. Many images record social outings and picnics, especially at Northcote. These include both men and women dressed up for the occasion. There is a goup image of the St James Football Club dressed for the game dated 1895. Two photographs show a horse and buggy driven by a youthful Uncle Harold accompanied by Grandpa Jenkin and baby Irene. Another shows Mr Ogles's horse and cart, and another Jim Bailey's (of Cabbage Bay) ox team. There is also an image of a team of horses and a sled taking the milk to the factory at Onewhereo. There are images of waterfalls at Karekare and Nihotapu (Waiatura), and of the Nihotapu Creek. Talks about her paternal great grandfather's cabinet and furniture making career, which included making furniture for English royalty and about her father's work as a builder and her mother's as a music teacher. Describes her education and details the development of her reading habits and tastes and where she got books from. Talks about working for her future parents-in-law. Describes training as a primary school teacher at Auckland Teachers' Training College, teaching at Maungaturoto District High School Primary Department and then relief teaching both before and after her marriage to Arthur Edward Keith Bilkey in 1951. Details the development of their orchard from citrus to kiwifruit and gives some historical background to the development of the Kerikeri area, Kerikeri Primary School and the beginnings of the orchard industry in the area. Describes how the community changed with the influx of orchard people. Mentions the development of clubs and services and how cut off Kerikeri had been in the early days. Notes that there are very few Maori in Kerikeri. Details her involvement with the Kerikeri Public Library as a committee member from 1962-1980 and the early development of the library before the Public Library was established. Describes how the books were looked after by individuals, then by the Plunket Society and then in the school building, membership charge, source of books from Country Library Service and private donation, lending and overdue policy.
