Description: The index map, Sheet N, of the scheme for the Lower Manawatu area begins at the mouth of the Manawatu River, reaching as far as Ashhurst and the Kiwitea Stream. The scheme for the Oroua River is also included from the junction near Rangiotu to the vicinity of Kiwitea Stream. Notes about stopbanks, boundaries, railways and classes of valuation are referred to in a key. An extensive valuation table, entitled Rate Yield of Zone Districts includes information about twelve disticts, their areas and capital value of classes. The eight sheets, numbered 1a to 8a, are enlargements of Sheet N showing rural properties adjacent to the rivers, which are divided into classes according to their valuation and referred to in a key. Each property is numbered and includes the owner's name and acreage. Notes on each sheet state that the maps were compiled from Valuation Rolls 3/12 to 3/24 and 1399, 1402, 1425, 1428, 1432, 1441-2, 1476, 1478. Includes named streets, State Highways 1, 12, 30 and 97 as well as the Main Trunk Railway Line and deviation near Longburn. Three amended maps on Sheet 9a are of parts of Sheets 1a. 2a. 5a. Manawatu Catchment Board Plan no. 1/80 has been crossed out on all maps and 514 inserted before copying Originals signed by P.G. Evans, Chief Engineer, 7/12/51, 16/12/52, 12/12/54. Sheet 9a is dated 12/12/54. It was drawn and traced by L.W. Pirie and checked by P.G. Evans. Scale on Sheet N is [1:63 360] and on Sheets 1a to 9a [1:15 840]. Quantity: 5 map(s) on ten sheets. The first map is the index map which details the layout of eight sheets comprising the second map. The remaining three amended maps are on the tenth sheet. Description: Interview with Kee Sun Young, born Kong Wu village, Guangzhou, China, 5 February 1927. Mentions his grandfather had come to New Zealand as a gold miner, but returned in 1926 and sent his father in his place. Comments that his father lived mainly in New Zealand and they did not meet until he was five years old. Discusses how his family became refugees in Vietnam when the Japanese army invaded southern China. Refers to his father being a market gardener at Ohau, and sending for him when he was 13. Mentions starting school in New Zealand in a small class of Chinese students learning English. Describes the primitive living conditions in a hut without electricity. Mentions working for his father after leaving school and then for a fruiterer in Lower Hutt, until he bought out an uncle's share in a fruit shop in Hataitai when he was 18. Comments on learning from a letter in 1946 that he was married by proxy, arranged by his grandfather. Refers to buying a shop in Nelson, becoming naturalised in 1958, and then returning to China in 1959 to meet his wife for the first time and bring her back. Describes becoming a market gardener in Te Horo in 1961, the crops grown, the land he bought, and employing new migrants. Discusses transporting produce, the tractors and other machinery used for field crops, pest control, and the role of his sons continuing market gardening. Refers to joining the Otaki District Commercial Gardeners Society when he began gardening because its store was convenient and efficient.
