Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. Several of these were taken by Neville Hatwell. This sheet shows Queenstown Lakes District, and Milford. Views include Queenstown; the Remarkables in the evening with the launch 'Moana' moored at a pier on Lake Wakatipu in the foreground; Lake Manapouri; Te Anau township; the Eglinton Valley and Hollyford Valley, both taken by Neville Hatwell; portal of the Homer Tunnel, and views the other side en route to Milford Sound, including Mount Tutoko and the Cleddau River; the Milford Track; views of the Sound, Sutherland Falls, Lake Ada, Sandfly Point and Sinbad Gully; and the Milford Sound airstrip with a small plane on the runway. Description: Photographs taken over two winters when Alister Duthie was employed on the Homer Tunnel between 1937 and 1939. Photographs taken while Alister Duthie was a member of the "Cape Expedition" which established coastwatching functions in New Zealand's subantarctic islands during the Second world War. While employed at the Homer Tunnel Alister Duthie's main job was to patrol the power lines and report any breakages or other damage. According to Alister Duthie The first trip of the "Cape Expedition" in 1941 was in the "Ranui". The time was spent on board coastwatching, going ashore mainly to hunt fresh meat. Dr Robert Falla, then Director of the Canterbury Museum, was also on this trip, specifically because of his knowledge of the subantarctic islands. The second trip which Duthie made was on the "Tagua" to Campbell Island where they spent their time doing meteriological work. At the end of this term of duty he returned to New Zealand on the "New Golden Hind." The "Ranui," "Tagua," and "New Golden Hind," were three small ships used by the New Zealand Goverment to service its coastwatching committments, not only on its subantarctic islands, but throughout the Pacific. Description: Photographs of YMCA Christmas trips in 1938 and 1939, to Milford Sound and the Whanganui River, taken by William Hall Raine. As well as photographs there are a number of newspaper and magazine cuttings, some of which were produced in the New Zealand Free Lance (January 25, 1939), following the Wellington Y.M.C.A. party on their trip to Milford. The photographs of the Whanganui trip were not taken by William Hall Raine, as he was on the Milford trip at the time. Description: Album containing many contacts from 35mm film, as well as black and white prints of differing sizes, taken by Professor John Tenison Salmon. He takes particular interest in the flora and fauna of New Zealand, the damaging effects of road construction, erosion from bush felling, and destruction caused by introduced species including deer. There are huge collections of close-up images of various plants (only a few of which are listed above), including flowers, leaves and seeds. He comments on mangrove swamps at Tauranga, which are growing at the furthest point from the Equator possible for them to exist. The other important collection shows various stages in the life cycle of insects and animals, including wetas, katydids, different types of moths, mosquitoes, bees, stick insects, and native New Zealand frogs (Hochstetter's frogs) (p. 91-92). Photographs relating to wetas include scenes of ovipositor tracks of cave wetas in the mud in Waitomo Caves; different varieties of wetas including cave wetas; and weta nests. In 1935 he photographed two Australian species of lizards which he found in the yard of the Dominion Museum, the Australia crested dragon, and the Australian blue-tongued lizard. Many of these photographs were taken on a photomicroscope, including photographs of rock sections (p. 72-75), and photographs of insects and larvae. There are also views of his photomicrosope equipment. Professor Salmon worked at Victoria University, and there are numbers of "contaflex" views of Wellington from his office window, taken to demonstrate the use of various filters (p. 26-29). There are also images of Professor Salmon in his study lab in April 1955; and further images of him in the Entomological Department of the Dominion Museum. Page 35 has views of a science exhibition organised by the Wellington Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand held in the Wellington Town Hall, 12-14 April 1948. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
