Description: Album compiled by Lieutenant E R C Jackson, which includes commercial views of the Middle East, India and Sydney; one section shows war photographs.. The first group consists of postcards of Egypt (some coloured), particularly of Cairo and the pyramids, and the Suez Canal. Pages 33-47 are in numbered sequences of 20 scenes, each one with a small index inserted at the beginning. They include views of Lebanon and Syria, in particular Aleppo (now Halab), Hama (or Hamah), Homs (or Hims), and Damascus. Pages 48-50 are commercial views of Greece, particularly Athens. Pages 57-73 are chiefly scenes of war in the Middle East, including one of a dead parachutist, a German war cemetery, a German prisoner and a series of attacks on Italian shipping. Some show groups of soldiers in the desert, and two are of Montgomery of Alamein. A further series of commercial scenes are of Cairo, Nazareth, Tiberias, and Haifa, finishing with views of Sydney. Description: Interview with Jamelee (or Jamelie) Joseph, born in Walker Street, Dunedin, in 1904, one of seven children in a Lebanese Catholic family. Talks about her parents having emigrated in the late 1890s and her father working as a hawker. Comments that because of his gambling the family sometimes faced hard times. Discusses attending St Joseph's School and Dunedin Technical College, but not being able to go to secretarial college because of the family's financial difficulties. Recalls in detail and candour her childhood and later life in the Walker Street area. Talks about marrying Jack Joseph of the Fahkri clan and also a resident of Walker Street, and the death of their infant son in 1940. Discusses how the onset of World War II gave her an opportunity to take up paid employment again, and working for Ross and Glendinning as a machinist until aged 67. Talks about travelling extensively overseas with her husband and living for a period in Lebanon. Includes two agendas from 1941 and 1942 which have been annonotated like a diary by Adams. The annotations begin 17 March 1941 and end 31 December 1941 and briefly describe Adams' activities and mindset. Also includes a bound volume titled "Steimatzy's Guides: Syria and Lebanon", which describes the two countries' geography, history, population, and administration. Also includes a bound volume of the New Testament. The cover has a crown on King George VI's initials on it. There is an accompanything printed message from the King. Title supplied by Library.
