Description: Album compiled by Patrick Kelliher. Chiefly photographs relating to the construction of the power station at Tuai in the 1930s taken by Kelliher, a keen amateur photographer who worked in the powerhouse. Includes images of pack horses, heavy machinery and trucks, the construction of tunnels, spillway, a bridge, pipes, the power house and the huts in which workers lived. Also includes five images taken after the Kopuawhara flash flood of 19 February 1938 (in which 21 people were drowned) and a newspaper cutting from a year after the flood. Also a set of 14 images taken at Wairoa railway station at the the opening ceremony of the 97 mile Napier-Wairoa-Waikokopu portion of the Napier-Gisborne railway, also taken by Kelliher. Images include steam and diesel engines, visiting dignitaries and Maori performers. Also one photograph of Kelliher on a horse drawn cart in Masterton, Wairarapa, taken circa 1980s and a 1990 certificate to Kelliher from the Lions Club of Wainuiomata. Description: Describes family background and childhood. Recalls education at Sisters of St Joseph Convent, Gisborne, including the standard of education, discipline, sport. Discusses the following topics both in childhood and later life:- religion, politics, alcohol, smoking and contact with Maori. Refers to World War I, mainly in terms of the Cadet Corps and Territorials. Discusses his engineering apprenticeship with Jas J. Niven & Co, Gisborne, from 1919; the incentive scheme to encourage high standards for apprentices; night school. Recalls passing tests to join the New Zealand Navy as Engine Room Artificer (E.R.A.) but no vacancies so found work for Public Works Department at the construction site of Lake Coleridge Power Station. Describes the duplication of power stations, erecting 6.6 kilovolt switchgear, the layout of the station, the social life, accommodation, domestic arrangements and sport. Recalls transfer to Tuai Power Station, Lake Waikaremoana in 1929 and describes Tuai, the construction camp and some of the tough characters among the construction workers, gambling, drinking and the official opening. Describes meeting his wife, their engagement and wedding. Recalls events at Tuai Power Station during the Napier earthquake in 1931. Backgrounds his promotion and transfer to Lake Waitaki Power Station and describes the layout of the power station, his friendship with Phil Blakeley, the engineer. Discusses trade unions and recalls strike at Haywards Sub Station, Wellington. Mentions forming the Kurow Dramatic Society with the local parson (later professor) Lloyd Geering. Remembers aspects of the first Labour Government, 1935, particularly the enthusiasm which greeted Bob Semple on a visit to Tuai. Recalls spending war years (World War II) at Lake Waitaki, the running of Kaitawa Station in 1947 and the effect on his health, work as a System Operator at Addington Sub Station, Christchurch and explains system control of water flow, and analysing rainfall in the South Island.
