Description: The story of the Brooke family from Pyrford, Surrey and their immigration to New Zealand in 1910. The two sons, Jack and Cecil, began their farming life in the Kaikoura district as farm cadets. For seven years they farmed at Kaikoura from where the boys went to war and served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and later in the 1st New Zealand Machine Gun Squadron. After Cecil Brooke's leave he bought a small dairy farm at Ruakura in 1920 and 5 years later married Dorothy Hutchinson. They farmed at Ruakura for 34 years, and purchased a further 200 acres of peat swamp to break in. Description: Travel journal kept by a Mr Pontifex, apparently a lawyer in Brisbane. Records his travels to the Australian outback, New Zealand, Europe and Britain. Describes travel from Brisbane to St George Qld (1886); Christchurch to Blenheim (Oct-Nov 1889), involving a tour of sheep stations on horseback with a friend, recording names of stations and owners, notes on scenery and state of roads; Christchurch to Hanmer via Kaikoura (Dec 1889) on foot or by coach, with similar descriptions; North Island Jan-Feb 1890, with visits to Maori villages, including Parihaka, where he met Te Whiti. Described in some detail. Other passages record trips to Europe. At the end of the book is a resume of his extensive travels. Images are almost exclusively of the exterior of buildings with only the interiors of woolsheds seen. Many images include the families that lived in the houses and often their dogs. Farm workers are seen in some images. Farm animals pictured include sheep, horses, mules, farm dogs, and oxen. Activities such as shearing with a Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine, wool sorting, wool scouring, wool transportation (horse drawn carts and ox wagons), sheep dipping, and sheep drafting are shown.
