Description: A colour photograph album showing Pam Jongejans' work and travels in the Country Library Service van throughout the South Island between1973 and 1983, The photographs include the van, small libraries, accommodation, landscapes and mountains, roads including Arthurs Pass and Haast Pass, Jongejans herself, Jongejans' Pomeranians, other librarians, and people using the library van services. The first 12 pages are blank. A sticker on the cover reads “Emma’s”, The first photograph is captioned “Dec 72, Meadow at Springs Junction Hotel”. Many of the photographs appear to have annotations on the back, most have handwritten captions on the page. The first half of the album is arranged chronologically with headings of “South trip” and “Centre trip” each year from 1973 to 1976, and “North trip” from 1974 to 1976. The south trips included scenic photographs of Clifden, Glenorchy, and Queenstown. The centre trips covers Akaroa and Banks Peninsula, Punakaiki, Lake Hawea, Lake Brunner, the Buller River, Benmore Power Station, Paerau, Hakataramea Valley, and Fox Glacier. The north trips included Golden Bay, Pupu Springs, Motueka, Havelock, French Pass, and Kaikoura. The next section headed “CCL” includes photographs of other library staff. Named people include Alan Campbell (May 1981); The “debating club” consisting of Des Stevens, Peter Hastie, Colin Reeves, Alan Campbell (July 1981); a group photograph with the caption “Short course 1975” with the libraries represented named but not the people. Sections following this show a new yellow van in 1976, field librarians meeting in Cromwell 1973, patrons using the library van, Oamaru Library in 1976, and Mosgiel Public Library in March 1983, Several items are interleaved. A print of “The borough of Naseby, Central Otago” by Patricia Atkinson is tucked inside the front cover. Newspaper clippings of the ‘Evening Mail Motueka News’ undated and ‘The Press‘ 30 April 1988 are interleaved in the “North Trip 1975” page. A biographical feature on Jongejans from the 'Southland Farmer', 1 September 1975 is pasted into the album, and a two page typescript entitled “Wall rugs or hangings” is interleaved in the Mosgiel Public Library page. Title supplied by Library. Emma Jongejans, known as Pam, started work at the Country Library Service in 1973. She drove a library van to take books from Christchurch to public libraries in towns and subscription libraries in smaller centres. Quantity: 1 album(s) containing 354 photographs.. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating.
