Description: A collection of newspaper clippings and other material, relating to the police career of Alexander Cruickshank, both in New Zealand and in Western Samoa; includes handwritten reminiscences, especially relating to early life in Scotland Source of title - Transcribed Cruickshank was born in Scotland, arrived at Bluff in 1878 on the Waitara and joined the Armed Constabulary. He served in the police at Lower Hutt, and in other parts of New Zealand. In 1915 he became inspector and in 1921 superintendent. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by David James Pirie; one page extract from `100 years at Morton Mains'; certificates of title; photographs of William Pirie taken about 1920 and in 1942; letter from James Pirie of Invercargill. Original owner of the property was William Pirie who acquired 232 acres in 1900. In 1914 a further 212 acres were purchased from Colin Gerrard. In 2005 the land was farmed by his son James and grandson, David Pirie and was awarded the NZ Century Farm & Station award to mark 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. McKay, Alexander, 1841-1917 : Papers

Description: Papers consist of 3 letters written by McKay. Two, dated 1915 and 1917 are to his nephew Peter Shankland and deal with photographic and family matters. The third, dated 1864 is to McKay's brother Robert and describes his journey in Southland to the Hogburn gold fields. Also included is typed transcripts of one of the letters to Shankland and typed and holograph transcripts of the letter to Robert McKay. The papers also include an obituary for McKay's son Duncan, copies of photographs of McKay taken by Peter Shankland and some biographical and explanatory notes supplied by the donor. Source of title - Supplied title Other - Typed transcribing done by Jocelyn Thornton. Alexander McKay was born in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1863 on the `Helenslee'. He landed at Bluff and for some time was a gold miner in Otago and Whakamarino after which he moved to Australia and worked in the New South Wales and Queensland diggings. In 1866 he returned to NZ and for the next 4 years was engaged in exploring and prospecting the south-west part of the McKenzie country. He claimed to be the first man to refrigerate meat in NZ. He became the prospecting assistant to Julius von Haast and between 1873 and 1893 was a permanent officer of the Geological Survey and then a Mining geologist. In 1893 he was appointed Government Mining Geologist and retained this position till his retirement in 1906. He was a keen photographer and invented the telephoto lens. He paid for his nephew Peter Shankland to come to New Zealand in 1909 aboard the 'Ruapehu' in the hopes he would settle to farming in New Zealand. Instead Shankland continued with his work in photography, opening a studio in Carterton. It was Peter Shankland who took the well known photo of McKay sideview holding a book. Quantity: 2 folder(s).
