Description: Charles Elliot Fox came to New Zealand in 1884, where his father served as an Anglican minister in Gisborne. Recalls his childhood in Gisborne; the Tarawera eruption and his mother's death from tuberculosis on the night of the eruption, the possibility of a visit of Te Kooti to Gisborne; attending Napier High School and memories of Te Aute; his study of Greek and Latin and playing cricket and rugby. Discusses attending St John's College, Auckland and pranks played. Describes walking from Napier to Wellington. Comments on the bush around Norsewood and Woodville and Napier before the earthquake. Recalls listening to William Colenso's sermons, and boyhood friendship with Percy Spiller. Describes Samuel and Leonard Williams. Recalls his early interest in Melanesia. Describes time as a headmaster on San Cristobal and experiences with local headhunters. Comments on this practice in relation to weapons supplied by the British. Describes dressing as a Melanesian while living in the islands and preaching sermons in eight languages. Talks about his compilation of a language dictionary and publication of a book on the area. Description: Photographs fall into three general groups: those relating to Jock McEwen's professional career with Island and Maori affairs; those that relate to his interest in Māori art and culture; those that probably relate in some way to his own family and background. The first group includes recordes of the diplomatic and ceremonial side of events in Samoa, The Cook Islands, and Tokelau, in the 1970s. There are groups of photographs of Wellington Māori clubs rehearsing for Waitangi Day celebrations, and of events at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference Wellington, 1965. The second group consists of photographs of mahi toi (Māori art), taonga (artifacts), and whare (buildings). Many of these date from the 1880s and 90s and some have belonged to S Percy Smith, one of the albums having his name on the end paper. In this group there are also photographs of Māori, and groups of Māori, many in traditional dress photographed in association with wharenui (meeting houses). Some of the people have been identified. There are also what may be personal and family photographs. The largest collection of these have been made by a missionary family working in the Melanesian Mission in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu (New Hebrides) between 1918 and 1928. Sir Colin was appointed in 1945 to the British Colonial Service in Fiji. He was transferred to the Solomon Islands serving in a variety of positions until 1953 when he was named Special Lands Commissioner to the Western Pacific High Commission. Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Pacific theatre during World War 2, 1943-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Many individuals identified are listed above, but while many others are identified in group portraits they are not named above. Amongst the official NZ photographs there are a few from the official British war photographs. Signals personnel train at the New Zealand School of Signals in New Caledonia; New Zealanders construct roads on Vella Lavella; the Post office at Vella Lavella; the boot repair section; arrival of Xmas mail in New Caledonia. Works services engaged in construction of the NZ General Hospital No 4; hospital wards; wounded and sick soldiers with nursing staff; and convalescents; Xmas dinner at the Artillery Training Dept; New Year function at the No 4 General Hospital (Boguen Detachment); an ice cream plant amenity provided by the NZ National Patriotic Fund Board. In New Caledonia there are many scenes of the Kalavere Hospital and the 2nd NZ Convalescent Depot; the opening of the new Kiwi Club built by NZ work services personnel who built it from prefabricated sections made in NZ, with representatives from the NZ National Patriotic Fund Board attending; a dance at the club; dance band; and the Moindah Racing Club meeting. On Mono Island a naval control tower; and Saveke Bridge built by NZ engineers. On Stirling Island scenes of an antitank battery; army and navy personnel meet on Treasury Island; Anzac Day parade in Bourail Camp (New Caeldonia); scenes of members of the Fijian Defence Force with New Zealanders in Bouganville; a native church at the Allied Cemetery in Guadalcanal.
