Description: Most of the cards date from ca 1904 to ca 1920. New Zealand cities and towns are represented, including many notable buildings, monuments, and parks. Tourist destinations like Lake Wakatipu, the Whanganui river, and thermal areas feature. One group depict native forest as scenery. There are also memorial cards, the largest number for Richard Seddon, and one for T E Taylor Mayor of Christchurch. One card is of the famous female cross dresser and con-man/woman, Amy Bock. Two cards depict champion New Zealand rowers, Richard Arnst, William Webb, George Whelch, and W Fogwell. Several of the greeting cards, which are scattered throughout the album, depict Maoriland maidens. Another group of cards feature sheep, in flocks on the road, crossing bridges, and at pasture. There is also a group of cattle beasts including highland cattle. Thermal areas include Whakarewarewa, steaming cliffs on Lake Rotomahana, and Waimangu. There is also one photograph of a dairy factory and the milk arriving in wagons. The largest group of town images relate to Palmerston North, most dating from about 1908. The largest group of post cards in the album are all sorts of greeting cards, many of which are hand coloured. Description: Cities towns and tourist destinations in New Zealand. Album opens with general views of Christchurch, and particular places which include Cathedral Square, and the River Avon. There is one view of Christchurch from the air. Photographs of thermal regions include the Government Bath House, Rotorua. Lake Tarawera. Lake Rotomahana. Whakarewarewa. Waimangu. Wairakei. Two views of Auckland. One view of Mount Ruapehu. Wanganui and the Whanganui River. A trip on the Whanganui River. Wanganui River boats, one the SS Ohura. Picton and Nelson and a trip on Pelorus and Queen Charlotte sounds in the SS Blenheim. Cadillac motor car abandoned after the engine caught fire. Views of Dundedin and Invercargill. Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the SS Earnslaw. Wellington views and the Rimutaka Incline. Family groups at Lyall Bay. Ships SS Moeraki in Wellington Harbour, and the barque France at Wellington Warves. The front page of the album is inscribed with the name M Couwell, and dated 28th Dec 1922. This person is likely to have been the recipient of the album. Some duplicate prints in the collection have notes on the back in a consistant, neat handwriting. In three cases these are signed E N Webster, who advises that he arrived in Wellington 5 February 1918, and left 15 June 1922. During this period he holidayed to the various places recorded in the album. The photographs were taken between 1919 and 1921 judging from dates on the duplicates. His second name was Norman, and this is the name he used to sign letters on postcards sent from Christchurch in 1919 to his mother, and a friend called May. There is also a note attached to an illustration of Ben Lomond in the collection in which he gives his name as Norman Webster. Information on postcards indicate that he came from Australia, and in 1916 lived at Nambour, Queensland. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Album is extensively captioned though few people are identified. - Motoring trip of North Island in January 1931, following family on a camping trip in a A-Model Ford. Route, as suggested by image order in album, goes via Hastings, Wairoa, Lake Waikaremoana, Morere, Gisborne, Opotiki, Ohope, Whakatane, Rotorua, Whakarewarewa, Tauranga, Waihi, Thames, Mercury Bay, Tui Glen, Waiwera, Waipu, Whangarei, Bay of Islands, Mount Messenger and Dawson Falls. Images feature camp grounds and sites, car with tent awning erected and with gear packed alongside, picnicking scenes, motoring scenes, and tourist sights on route. Diary of horseback riding and camping tour through Taranaki and Waikato Regions

Description: Account of riding holiday taken by Phyllis Long and Sylvia Lysaght on horses Ngaio and Ladybird. Describes route from Punarima via Mokoia, Hawera, Ngaere, Stratford, Te Whera, Pohukura, Whangamomona, Ohura, to near Aria. Then by car to Te Kuiti and on to Waitomo Caves. Return journey by foot to Te Kuiti and back to Aria by car. Route on horseback continues with the two women travelling down the Awakino River to the sea and then back to Punarima via Tongaporutu, White Cliffs, Urenui, and New Plymouth. Account describes the people they meet and places they stayed along the way. Camping spots, bush, the condition of the horses (including Ngaio almost drowning), rats, mosquitos, bathing, and food (including picnics). Also description of Waitomo Caves. People of note include: Mr Henry and Mrs Ida Barwick (of near Te Wera): the Good family (also of near Te Wera) who rode through the Tangarakai Gorge with them; and the Ritchie family (including Thomas, Mary, and John) of Aria, formerly of the Chatham Islands, where they left their horses when they travelled on to Waitomo. Description: Contains miscellaneous lantern slides of New Zealand scenes, mostly dated ca 1907. Likely to have been photographed by Butcher. Landscapes include a hand-coloured slide of a Burton Brothers photograph of Lake Wakatipu from Kinlock, unidentified coastal towns and harbour views (one featuring an obelisk monument), rock formations, and river scenes (some bridges). Images of Wellington include the Provincial Council Building, view of Thorndon (Molesworth Street), and boats on the beach in Island Bay with Tapu Te Ranga Island in the background. Images of Napier include newly planted Norfolk Pine trees on Marine Parade and outer harbour wharf scene. Album featuring mountaineering, tramping, and World War Two photographs

Description: Photograph album compiled by Les Cleveland, comprising mainly photographs of mountaineering expeditions and tramping trips, 1939-1951, as well as images relating to his service in World War Two. Photographs showing Cleveland himself are taken by unidentified photographers. Most images are captioned with names, locations, and, in some cases, dates. Mountaineering and tramping photographs comprise the majority of prints in the album. New Zealand images feature Southern Alps and Canterbury, with many peaks, valleys, passes, and glaciers identified. Huts (interior and exterior) are also featured and most are identified. North Island tramping locations include the Tauherenikau Valley and Orongorongo Valley. Expedition members also appear in photographs but are largely unidentified. Album also includes photographs of a hunting trip at Mount Somers and various skiing scenes. Christchurch Ski Club (1951) and Ruapehu Ski Club (group portrait and building) are identified. Some individuals are identified. "Junee" is pictured crouched with an ice axe (page 5), Sophia Walsh of Christchurch appears in a seaside portrait (page 60), A B [Borely?] is identified on the Mt Somers hunting trip, Doug Fyfe is pictured mountaineering, and J Lange is seen rappelling in the Port Hills. Cleveland appears in several photographs. World War Two photographs feature New Caledonia in 1942. The images include military camps, scenic landscapes, and church at Thio as well as recreation scenes (swimming, boating, collecting oysters). Cleveland is pictured playing a guitar in a number of photographs. Also includes photographs of soldiers on motorbikes at an unknown location and a group photograph captioned "I4 Platoon". Album also includes mountaineering group in the Dolomite Ranges, postcards of Gruppo di Brenta, Rufugio Gonella, and Cormaiore. A boating scene from Lake Trasimeno, Italy, is included as is a [European?] skiing trip in 1945 and mountaineering Other images show the Majestic Caberet, Wellington (1950) and Ashburton Races (1939).
