Description: Five photographs of illustrations from S T Gill's "Victoria Illustrated". They depict Melbourne Cathedral; Dight's Mill, Yarra Yarra; Government Office, Melbourne; University of Melbourne; and steam packet wharf, Mack's Hotel, Geelong. Quantity: 5 b&w original photographic print(s). Provenance: These photographs were discovered in the Bowen basement amongst the War History Collection. With them was a letter dated 12th March 1924 from the principal librarian of the Public Library of New South Wales to Johannes Andersen, the librarian of the Turnbull Library. The letter identifies the photographs as being of illustrations from Gill's book, published by Sands & Kenny, Melbourne, in 1857.

Description: Album of scenic views of Tasmania, Sydney and wider New South Wales, and of New Zealand, both North and South Islands. Views of lighthouses include Derwent Lighthouse (Tasmania), Macquarie Lighthouse (South Head, Sydney), and Farewell Spit Lighthouse (Tasman Region, New Zealand). The New Zealand photographs are nearly all taken by Josiah Martin, and include one that is a collage of scenes he photographed, and one of Maori weapons, with captions to say they were deposited [in Auckland Museum] by Captain Gilbert Mair. Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area. Description: Albumen prints of Fijian people, a photograph of Dunedin taken by J R Morris, and newspaper cuttings about the SS Mataura were inserted in the front pocket of the album. (The albumen prints have now been placed in protective sleeves and are housed in an envelope outside the album) Album of photographs, albumen prints of popular art works, maps, hand-written and illuminated programmes, and one hand-written poem, created by William Fox Wheeler between 1864 and 1869, during which he was purser on board the SS Mataura. Most of the art-works and hand-written and illustrated items were done by William Fox Wheeler himself. Items of unusual interest are listed below. A map "shewing mail services performed by the Panama, New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Company, and lines connecting with the company's vessels at Panama" (between p. 46-47). Interspersed with albumen prints of popular art works such as "The Angel Gabriel", "Mother & child", "The Last farewell of Marie Antoinette", and "Fascination" are scenes of places visited by the SS Mataura in the 1860s. Numbers of images show scenes in New Zealand, many of which are unidentified. Several are small portraits of Maori men and women. The album contains a page with early New Zealand, German, Australian and United States postage stamps. A photograph of a painting by Gustavus Von Tempsky showing "`Waiari' scene of conflict with the rebel Maoris on the 11th February 1864" is on page 27.
