Description: Fourteen photographs taken by Sgt J C Read of ANZAC Day in London. They include views of Australian and New Zealand troops marching along The Strand watched by large crowds; dignitaries, including King George V, leaving the memorial service held at Westminster Abbey; and two in Gallipoli, one of wounded soldiers waiting to be transported and the other of New Zealand graves. The collection also includes one photograph from the Second World War of the staff of the Radio Development Laboratory, which was probably on Majoribanks Street, Wellington, and the Governor-General Sir Cyril Newall. Description: Group portrait of the Members of the House of Representatives, New Zealand military personnel and members of the visiting Japanese Training Squadron. The group taken on the steps of parliament House after the Government's luncheon to Vice-Admiral Saito and his principal officers, Captain Mitsumasa Yonai (Iwate), Captain Wataru Ugawa (Yakumo), and Captain Sueki Yonemura (Asama). The Vice-Admiral is sitting in the front row between the Rt Hon W F Massey (Prime Minister) and Hon Sir W E Carncross (Speaker of the Legislative Council). Sir Joseph Ward is sitting next to Sir Francis Bell. Others in the front row are Hon R F Bollard, Hon W Nosworthy, Hon C E Statham, T M Wilford, Commodore Beal, Hon Sir Heaton Rhodes. The photograph was published (along with others taken during the visit) in the New Zealand Free Lance, 13 Feb 1924 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Muir & MacKinlay Photo 1924 The Imperial Japanese Navy sent its new cadets on long training voyages each year from 1872. 23 voyages were made to Australasia and 13 went as far as New Zealand. Description: Mostly relates to the construction of a port and facilities at Safaga, Egypt on the Red Sea during the Second World War. Safaga port was the Red Sea teminal of a railway line built to connect the coast with the Nile at Quena. The route for the railway line and the port was surveyed by New Zealand engineers and the line was constructed by the Egyptian Railway Department. The purpose of the line and the port was to provide infrastructure to facilitate retreat and evacuation should the Nile Delta be lost. Prior to the war a British phosphate company had established an operation at Safaga and had built a small jetty there. This is also recorded in the photographs. Also in the desert on the route between Safaga and Quena are the Roman ruins of the Mons Claudianus Baths which were the site of a good water supply There is also a record of Peter Fraser and General Freyberg in Rome in June 1945 Quantity: 87 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Photographs of the Japaneses capitulation in South East Asia and the Pacific, particularly Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. They include a number of photographs of Japanese prisoners of war being marched to camps; the signing of surrender documents by Australian officers; painting Japan Surrenders on the underside of RAAF plane wings to inform Japanese forces; the announcement of the Japanese surrender by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten in Singapore; the Duke of Gloucester, Governor General of Australia, visiting troops; a Japanese tank on fire; and earlier photographs of Allied forces on Bougainville in 1944. The photographs are nearly all official Royal New Zealand Air Force and are captioned on the reverse. One group relates to aerial battles at sea with views of aircraft on the decks of carriers, in the air, dog fights indicated by vapour trails, sinking ships, troops dropped by paracutes, and burning buildings. The other, larger group, were taken while Ian Harper was serving with J Force, part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force, Japan. During this time he was a driver in the Transport Section of Headquarters Company, 27 Battalion based in Yamaguchi. Photographer(s) unidentified.
