Details wages, cost of living, walking to different areas. Describes training for the Territorial Army Reserves, medical discharge and working as instructor for Home Guard at Godfrey Head. Mentions Fred Jones, Minister of Defence. Talks about going to sea in 1940 with the New Zealand Shipping Co on the Surrey and returning from the United Kingdom on the Hurunui. Details torpedoing of the Hurunui, being picked up by the St. Margaret, transfer to Royal Navy ship, return to Glasgow and London and survivor's leave. Mentions British Sailors Society. Gives a little family background - The Warren family came to the Island end of 19th century - mother came as a guest to Great Barrier ca 1920 and met Moira's father. Family had a guest house at Port Fitzroy - refers to photograph in `Winkleman' - Images of early New Zealand - father was also a policeman. Recalls Island being closed down when the Japanese entered the war and a permit being required from the Army to enter the Island - residents also had to have identification papers. Talks about threat of Japanese invasion and precautions taken - school also had to close as it was commandeered for Army Headquarters; both entrances to Fitzroy Harbour being mined by Navy; war experience - voluntary work in artillery office and mines being exploded after the war. Talks about the social aspects of the war and the social life on the Island. Describes local school which her grandfather provided land for. Moira also discusses her connection with C B Radio which began 30 years ago. Recounts the ships use as a Barrage balloon in E-Boat Alley to protect convoys in Europe. Outlines torpedo and doodlebug attacks. Discusses cargoes of oil and army supplied shipping around the United States, Singapore, Suez and Singapore on the Samlight. Mentions mail stop at Pitcairn Island and ports of call in Australia and New Zealand. Recalls returning Russian serviceman in 1944 on the Empress of Australia, a former German ship, and receiving the Russian Commemorative Medal. Mentions fellow sailor Frank Barclay from Dunedin.
