Description: John Sweeney Prendeville was appointed Headmaster of South Makara School on 4 Nov 1872. The log book, kept by Prendeville for the period 1 Sep 1874 to 7 Jul 1879, notes daily events, subjects taught, inspectors' visits, tests held, attendance, weather conditions etc. At back of volume is a list of fifteen pupils with their dates of birth. Description: Includes a block plan showing the relative positions of the school, the residence, and the outbuildings. Also includes a floor plan, elevations and section of a wooden one-room school with an entrance corridor, chimney, and iron roofing. Plan notes that a new water tank was to be added, flooring was to be made good, there was to be a new ceiling and joists, and the galleries were to be removed. The corridor was also to be relined. Collected by architect Martin Hill as part of Project 787. Dated around 1890, because that is the year in which the shingle roof was replaced with a new iron roof, and an iron roof is shown on the north elevation. Refers to secondary schooling by correspondence, pastimes and games, with reference to horse-riding, bikes, marbles, rounders, football and soccer; Depression in Galatea, mail-order shopping and Farmer's Trading Company. Recalls time at Auckland Teachers' College; development of interest in cricket and basketball; Probationary year after college and teaching experience in rural schools; teaching arrangements during Polio epidemic; involvement and requirements of refereeing; Netball Umpires' Association, gaining badge 1943/44 and comments on lack of guidance for coaches. Explains difficulties of playing 7-a-side game and details differences in Australian game. Explains relationship between coaching and refereeing. Other topics discussed include: fundraising activities; uniforms; nomination as coach for New Zealand team to World Tournament in England (1963); style of Australian game; selection process for national coach. Description: Arthur Gordon Black recalls earliest recollections when he was a boy of four at Porangahau (Southern Hawkes Bay) in 1923 living on a soldier's resettlement farm. Mentions grandfather who lived with them and who had served in Afghanistan war. Describes childhood activities, traversing much of the countryside on foot and pony, finding a bird's nest which contained a human skull with a stone axe in it, and which is now in Napier Museum. Also describes Porangahau School and mentions Miss Tracey who taught there from 1924-1945 and Alf Mudgway. Mentions itinerant gentleman who took music. Other aspects of Porangahau discussed includes: Six o clock closing and Maori rule of not being allowed to take liquor away from hotel; 1931 Earthquake; Proficiency exam; lack of co-educational schools; camps for unemployed; Depression; college uniforms and church parades. Describes Wellington Teachers' College which re-opened after the Depression in 1938 and refers to New Education Conference. Mentions Frank Lopdell, Frank Coombs, Walter Scott and Ron Lockhart. Refers to First Labour Government in 1935. Outlines teaching career, commencing with probationary year at Te Awa School followed by sole charge at Tarawera. Explains how sole charge operated. Talks about experience in Air Force, spending three months in Mounted Rifle camp and refers to Sir Andrew Russell. Mentions Conscription. In 1942 joined Navy and talks about trip across Pacific to Canada, referring to `HMS Philomel' and `Capetown Castle'. Recalls two months course at St Vincents; flying Tiger Moths, Harvards and Barracuda (flying bomber) and learning to dive bomb and drop torpedoes. Talks about experience when at Crail. Recalls returning to New Zealand on HMS 'Illustrious'. Mentions wife, Margaret, having to wait for ship bringing war brides.
