Sister at the New Zealand General Hospital, Helwan, Egypt, in 1942. Serial Number: 63397. Married Joseph William Godfrey 22 July 1942. Died on active service from peptic ulcer on 24 April 1944.

Description: Contains photographs relating to Buckley's sister, Agnes Buckley, who served as a nurse during World War II. Many are of, or include, her. Images are taken by unidentified photographers (possibly including Agnes Buckley and Ron J Moore) with identified photographers John Buckley and Lieutenant C J Justins, ca 1915 to 1979. Photographs mainly relate to Agnes's service during World War II. These feature the time leading up to her departure (including the Waitomo Caves exhibition at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition and family scenes), tourist sites and street scenes in Egypt (including the Sphinx and the pyramids at Giza), fellow nurses and soldiers, and Agnes's funeral in Italy in 1944. There are a number of formal portraits. Miscellaneous images include a Wellington Bomber aircraft crashed on railway lines in Libya and the troopship 'Aquitania' docked in Wellington. Some images of Egypt are hand coloured. Additionally, Agnes's nursing training and work at Taihape Hospital before the war, and family life, are covered. These images include formal portraits. Description: Photograph album owned, and probably compiled by, Agnes Buckley containing photographs relating to Agnes Mary Buckley's family and her time working as a nurse at Whanganui Public Hospital, ca 1918-1935. Photographers unidentified. Album contains images from nursing life in Wanganui including Agnes and other nurses working (some identified by nicknames), patients in both the child and adult wards as well as convalescing outside in the garden, and preparations for a celebration at the hospital. Also shows the nurses socialising outside of work; new silk stockings, a picnic at Castlecliff Beach, and the wedding of an unidentified couple are covered. Family photographs include portraits as well as pictures from the farm featuring cows, horse riding, dogs, the family home, and clearance of farmland. Miscellaneous images show the main street of Taihape, Durie Hill and the Wanganui River, cars, rural roads, a tea party, Agnes on a motorbike, and an unidentified brass band. Album contains images of the Japanese Gardens in Helwan, Egypt [stock tourist images?]. Egyptian street scenes show local people, donkeys, a knife sharpener, and various carts. Agricultural images show sheep, water buffalo, and ploughing. The Great Sphinx of Giza and pyramids are also featured (one view is from the top of a pyramid). Military personal are depicted during recreation breaks, receiving bravery awards (Ron J Moore and T M Hutchinson), and convalescing in hospital. Agnes Buckley appears in a number of images. Photographs show the Great Sphinx of Giza, both before and after its excavation, and the pyramids, which are seen from a number of angles (including an aerial view and from across the Nile River). Featured Cairo buildings include Saladin Citadel, King Farouk Palace, the Blue Mosque, the interior of Mohammed Ali Mosque, Sultan Hassan Mosque, El-Mahmoudieh Mosque, Al-Rifa'i Mosque, and Cairo Central Railway Station. Album contains images of Agnes's departure from Wellington, including portraits of Agnes in her nurses uniform, and a family group. Images of the ocean voyage feature deck scenes with other nurses and views from the side of the boat. Egyptian images are mainly tourist snaps around cities including Cairo, Alexandria, and Helwan. Street scenes show gharry carts, nurses, local people, and donkeys. Mosques, churches, Saladin Citadel, King Farouk Palace, various gardens, and the Great Sphinx of Giza, also feature. Contains images of the military camp, including Agnes's tent, the mess where the nurses ate, and other details of daily life such as practicing fitting gas masks and a garden party held for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC).
