Description: Comprises letters from Helen Crabb (Barc) to Lindsay Kennett and accompanying material relating to Helen Crabb. Also, photographs of women's hats designed by Kennett together with newspaper clippings, advertisements, an exhibition catalogue and other papers relating to millinery and fashion design. Crabb's copies of the letters are available at MS-Papers-1838-15. Further material relating to the work of Kennett is held with the Ephemera collection. Lindsay Kennett was born in Glenorchy. He attended the Dunedin School of Art for his secondary education. In 1950 he moved to Wellington and worked as a window dresser in Kircaldie and Stains department store. Here he began to experiment with hat design and construction. His success in this field led to Kircaldie's commissioning him to supply them with hats, and to him developing a career as a milliner. He moved to Auckland in the early 1950s where, after a brief period at Smith and Coughey's department store, he began to work from home and opened a small exclusive salon in Parnell. Lindsay Kennett designed collections for the annual seasonal shows which he toured throughout New Zealand until the hat trade collapsed in the late 1960s due to changing fashion trends. He continued to design hats for a small group of clients and retired in the late 1980s. Quantity: 4 folder(s).
