Description: Comprises correspondence between Thomas King and Mary Chilman (later King), and between King and various family members and friends; King's business correspondence, especially relating to coastal shipping; papers relating to King's election to the House of Representatives (1853-1855, 1860) and to the Taranaki Provincial Council (1856, 1857-1861); a few relating to his career as manager of the Bank of New Zealand in New Plymouth (1861-1876); and a considerable amount relating to his position as chairman of the New Plymouth Harbour Board (1876-ca1889). Other papers include correspondence from Mary King to her husband, clippings and correspondence relating to Truby and Newton King, sons of Thomas and Mary King, various papers relating to Taranaki incidents including petitions, list of electors (1852) and other papers. The first letter and half of the second were written from Nelson, the remainder from Kakaramea in the Taranaki Province where Petch initially bought land but was ultimately forced to sell at a loss. Description: Drawn on a published map, the annotations depict nine Land Commission areas including New Plymouth, Uruti, Mangaroa, Purangi, Whangamomona, Strathmore, Eltham, Hawera and Matapouri. A reference chart indicates the number of 'Land for settlement' tenants and ordinary Crown tenants in each centre (Crown tenants are the majority). A second reference chart indicates these areas as proposed centres for the Land Commission to visit, indicates Crown Lands occupied by ordinary Crown tenants (depicted within red circle - all except Hawera) and lands occupied by 'Lands for settlement' tenants depicted in blue (Hawera and small areas in New Plymouth, Strathmore). Map is cut into 12 sections onto the linen for ease of folding. On reverse of map is written 'W.B.Matheson Taranaki map.' Description: Cadastral map depicting sections along the Waitotara River, Taranaki, near the bridge. Shows Murray, Russell, Karaka, Kaipo and Kells streets and the road from Ihupuku and the railway station. The majority of the sections are one rood in size. Lot 44 has 'Fisher store' pencil annotation, lot 60 'Vincent' and lot 19 'Stables'. The number '305' is written in large writing on the map across the sections between Russell and Karaka streets.
