Wisborg, Folke Bernadotte af, greve, 1895-1948

Count of Wisborg. Swedish diplomat, noted for his negotiation of the release of about 15,000 prisoners from German concentration camps during World War II. Chairman of the seventeenth International Red Cross Conference held in Stockholm in 1948. Assassinated later in 1948 in Jerusalem by members of the underground Zionst movement Lehi, while working as mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1947-48.

Description: Album of photographs and memorabilia collected by Miss Helen Iris Crooke when a delegate at the seventeenth International Conference of the Red Cross, held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1948. Scenes include group portraits of various delegates, portraits of the Chairman of the conference (Count Folke Bernadotte), the chairman of the League of Red Cross Societies (Basil O'Connor), and the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (Paul Ruegger). Scenes also include members of the Swedish royal family, the opening ceremony at the Royal Opera House, and scenes in various sections of the Houses of Parliament where most of the meetings were held. Towards the end of the album there are scenes of first aid demonstrations by members of the Swedish Red Cross. Included in the album is a page containing the full set of Swedish postage stamps of the time, issued and stamped at the Conference post office. Description: Jock Barnes, President of the New Zealand Waterside Workers Union, and Minister of Labour, Angus McLagan, are having a furious fight and have turned the prime minister's office upside-down. Prime Minister, Peter Fraser, has grabbed the phone and now says 'Hello, is that Count Folke Bernadotte...' Context - A clash between the more radical Barnes and Angus McLagan. McLagan clashed with unions who challenged the government's economic programme between 1946 and 1949 and came to see the hand of international communism in union opposition to the stabilisation policies of the war years and after. Count Folke Bernadotte was a United Nations peace negotiator, noted for his negotiation of the release of about 31,000 prisoners from German concentration camps during World War II. After the war, Bernadotte was unanimously chosen to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1947-1948.
