Description: Album of photographs compiled ca 1880s, from print published by F Bradley & Co, of Christchurch. Comprises views of Shag Rock, Timaru, Christchurch, Bealey, Greymouth, Oamaru, Rangitata River bridge, Dunedin, Taupo, Waimakariri River bridge, Governor's Bay, Kaiapoi, Arthur's Pass, Kawau Island, Cheviot, Akaroa Harbour, Alfred Falls, the Pink Terrace, White Island, Otira Gorge, Pigeon Bay, gold mining at Thames, Nelson, Heathcote River, the cable car across the Taramakau River, Sumner, and Tamatekapua meeting house at Ohinemutu. Also included are carte de visite portraits of Maori. Among the photographers whose work is shown are Herbert Deveril and Daniel Louis Mundy. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, both North and South Islands, taken by Daniel Mundy between 1860 and 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p. 51). The views include a number in the Thames goldfields, with scenes of gold batteries, miners' huts, and a tramway. Mundy includes two rivers which are now differently named, the Tekihe River [i.e. Taheke River], and Tiremakau River [i.e. Taramakau River]. Quantity: 1 album(s).
