McWhannell, Mac, 1890-1962
Born in Burwood, New South Wales, served in the Australian Imperial Force before coming to Christchurch in 1921.
Engaged to Rhoda McCurdie in 1922, married 23 November 1925. Often referred to as `Mac' in McWhannell photograph albums.
After a brief career in advertising, he bought a property at Ngāhinepōuri, Ōhaupō, south of Hamilton, which he named `Rozel', where he was engaged in dairying and in developing his authoritative interest in eucalypts.
He became an authority on farm forestry and tree culture, and wrote `Eucalypts for New Zealand farms, parks and gardens' (Hamilton, 1960). Some of McWhannell's papers are held at the Macmillan Brown Library, University of Canterbury.
Served in the Royal New Zealand Airforce from 1939.
Died 30 July 1962. Frederick and Rhoda McWhannell had no children.

Description:
Collection of photographs created and probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell, from the time of her marriage to Frederick McWhannell. The first scene shows them on their honeymoon, at One Tree Hill in Auckland, on 13th November 1922. From there they go to Whangarei, with views of the Whangarei Hospital, men playing tennis, a group of three men and a woman entitled `The foundations of "Fairview" Onerahi', and Whangarei Falls.
Following Whangarei are a number of views of Russell, including the jetty and `The Gables', and the yacht `Kitty fraser'.
Later in November they reach the Coromandel Peninsula, and photographs include Cyril Cory-Wright in the launch `Eilepa', and a photograph of Mrs Cory-Wright with her children Patsy and Derek; and the Reverend Norrie (minister of the Coromandel Peninsula).
The next group of photographs show Mrs Shires, and scenes of sheep mustering at `Oruru', Kaitieke in the King Country.
At the front of the album is an envelope with mostly unidentified people, taken much later, most of them being coloured.
Also inserted in the album is a newspaper cutting from the Herald (Section 2, Wednesday 13 June 1984), on a young couple (Tony and Sue Clark) who had managed to create a successful farm from very rough hill country on the Kawhautahi Road, near Kaitieke.

Scenic views of Cambridge, the lake at Hamilton, Puketeraki, Piha, and the farm `Rozel' near Ohaupo, interspersed with portraits of family and friends, chiefly taken by Rhoda McWhannell.
One photograph shows Rhoda McWhannell's parents (William Duncan Ross McCurdie and Olga Mariquita McCurdie) reading congratulatory messages on their Golden Wedding Anniversary. This album gives the date as 1942, but a previous album gives it as 1941.

Album of photographs relating to family and friends, travel, farming (including horticultural nurseries), and gardens, chiefly taken by Rhoda McWhannell.
The front page of the album contains 26 postage stamps from RSA (Republic of South Africa). One group shows individual children of different cultures issued for Christmas 1977; one group shows different varieties of South African plants inclduing proteas and leucodendrons; one image is of the university at Stellenbosch; and two are of historical events at Ulundi and Isandlwana.
The first part of the album relates to Rhoda McWhannell's brother and his family. Several are of Bill McCurdie's daughter Kirsten and her children in England, including views of Christ's Hospital School at Lincoln; others are of Bill and Inga McCurdie, with Kirsten and her children Simon and Alex in South Africa.
Photographs of `Rozel', the McWhannell farm and tree nursery are the main topic of the rest of the album. These range in time from the 1950s to 1980.
One small sequence shows the township of Ohaupo in 1960, with comments on buildings later demolished, and the contrast in 1980.

Views of the gardens and trees at Rozel, the forest farm owned by Mac (Frederick Brayshaw McWhannell) and Rhoda McWhannell. They include the entrance, the Rozel nursery, eucalyptus trees, Judas trees in bloom, a royal oak and oak blossom, and pinus radiata bloom.
One image shows Fred, Merta and Robert (Frederick McWhannell, Merta and Robert Alford); and another shows three men identified only by their Christian names (Ross, Jock and Cliff).
The last ten slides are entitled "Rozel. Illustrations for journal". They include views of the house, poplars, "Wee Dug" their dog, a croquet match played on Anzac Day 1961, sweet oranges, lemons and lemon blossom, Japanese maples, George (?) and a Judas tree.
