Description: This album was compiled by Second Lieutenant Spencely Noel Stanley Crump. It is a record of his time as a soldier in the New Zealand army during the Second World War. The record begins with photographs taken while training at Ngaruawahia Camp in September 1939. He and his company were transported to Egypt on the "Orion" where they underwent training at Maadi Camp. Also recorded are the rest and recreational facilities at the camp, as well as those at Helwan Camp, and trips to the pyramids. In 1940 he was with the army campaigning and preparing defences in the Western Desert. He was also sent to the Middle East Weapon Training School in Sarafand near Tel Aviv of which there are photographs as well as others of Palestine and Jerusalem. In 1941 he was sent to Greece and Crete. This part of the album also contains a page of photographs taken from a captured German paratrooper's camera. Following the campaigns in Greece and Crete, Crump returned to Egypt and took part in the war in Libya. There are several pages of photographs of Cairo and its citizens. Others are of nurses and patients at the British General Hospital at Geneifa, and the New Zealand General Hospital at Helwan where Crump went as a result of contracting pneumonia and developing infections in his wounds. In 1942 he returned to New Zealand on the hospital ship "Oranji". There are five pages of photographs taken on this trip. In New Zealand he was sent to the Soldiers Hospital in Rotorua for treatment. In 1943 he married. The album is well documented throughout, and most of Crump's many military associates are identified. A container of letters written by Crump while he was overseas was also donated with the album. The letters have been transferred to Manuscripts and Archives. In 1934 Spencely Noel Stanley Crump was a member of the New Zealand team to the Empire Games in London where he won a bronze medal in swimming. Pierce, Frank, 1900-1977: World War Two diary

Date: 12 Sep 1941 - 17 May 1942

By: Pierce, Frank, 1900-1977; Fong, Gloria, active 2015

Reference: MSX-9375

Description: Diary of Frank Pierce written during the period 15 October 1941 to 17 May 1942. Provides details of journey from Auckland to Egypt and describes life in the military camp at Maadi, including routine training, guard duties, hospital stay and study at the Signal School in early 1942. Mentions the names of numerous fellow New Zealand military personnel members, and ships encountered during the voyage from Wellington to Port Tewfik, Egypt. Describes journey from departure on 12 September 1941 from military training camp at Papakura, marching to Papakura Station and train journey to Wellington, followed by embarkation on the 'Aquitania' headed for Egypt. Voyage includes brief stops along the way at Fremantle and Colombo, before reaching the Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb and final arrival at Port Tewfik, on 19 October 1941. From there the journey to the Maadi military camp was completed by train via Cairo. The remainder of the diary describes a period spent in and around the camp at Maadi, and does not include the writer taking part in any military encounters or frontline action. The creator of the diary portrays the purpose of his writing as the creation of a record of 'my efforts to make the world safe for Democracy' (page 1). Reference is also made to the value of recording details in a diary that would not pass a military censor, noting 'I've already tried to give a description of the place (& what we did there), in my letters home, I'll not say much about it here, except to mention a few items that the Censor would not be likely to pass in a letter' (page 5). For example, the writer comments, 'Perhaps the futile, useless type of training we get, explains why we are still nowhere near beating Hitler' (page 30). Concludes with the description of the village nearest the camp, stating 'Maadi village is one of the most beautiful spots in Egypt, and it's a real pleasure merely to stroll round there, & if a chap doesn't go looking for trouble, it shouldn't be necessary for him to have to get a pass in order to spend a few hours of his own time there.' (page 67).
