Description: Album of scenic views of Tasmania, Sydney and wider New South Wales, and of New Zealand, both North and South Islands. Views of lighthouses include Derwent Lighthouse (Tasmania), Macquarie Lighthouse (South Head, Sydney), and Farewell Spit Lighthouse (Tasman Region, New Zealand). The New Zealand photographs are nearly all taken by Josiah Martin, and include one that is a collage of scenes he photographed, and one of Maori weapons, with captions to say they were deposited [in Auckland Museum] by Captain Gilbert Mair. Description: Ron Walker was born at Ferntown on 11 August 1903. Gives details of his family background and upbringing in Ferntown. Describes how his mother sometimes ran the Ferntown shop, in the 1890s, when the coke ovens were going. Describes the Mt. Burnett coal mine where his father worked and the last houses of the settlement. Talks about how hard-working his mother was bringing up eight children and looking after the house and the farm. Describes the Ferntown neighbours. Recalls the roads between Ferntown and Pakawau and the Ferntown school between 1908 and 1916. Talks about his varied jobs as a contract bush feller, road worker at Te Hapu, labourer at the Onekaka iron works, timber miller and farmer. Talks about accidents in the bush and the use of alcohol by some bushmen. Describes farming at the Triangle Valley farm in the Depression years and the effect on his health. Recalls in detail working at Sharland's Westhaven flaxmill, mustering trips to the Boulder Lake Run, `Haupiri Station', the Onekaka iron works and iron ore quarry, Farewell Spit lighthouse, shipping around Westhaven Inlet and the Benara Timber Company. Talks about his three wives and family they had.
