The origins of the Waikato Mounted Rifles, or locally raised mounted rifles and cavalry in the Waikato, can be traced back to the formation of the Royal Cavalry Volunteers in Auckland on 5 April 1860 and the lesser known Auckland Volunteer Cavalry Guard during the same year.
