Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: A collection of postcards and printed views (possibly from a magazine) of New Zealand scenes primarily of towns and cities rather than scenic views. They include one of two Maori women washing clothes at Rotorua, another of the Royal visit in 1927 and a family group of seven men and three women possibly taken in Belfast. A number of the postcards have been used. Also included are five original photographs which have been captioned with the family connections: a soldier in uniform, possibly named Ralph Ferguson; Uncle Henry Babe's wedding photograph; cousin Violet Bradford in America; Albert and Elizabeth (Eliza) Babe (brother and sister) and four others; Thomas and Fanny Babe (grandpa and grandma) with Eliza, Harold, Albert, Olivia, Queenie and Gladys. Compiler of albums, and photographer(s), are unidentified. Album is extensively captioned. - Images of Dunedin area are taken during a holiday to the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in 1924-1925. Photographs of sights include a bus trip to Waipori via Outram (including the Waipori River and power station), St Clair Beach (including the Baths and Tomahawk), waves at Ocean Beach, Dunedin Botanic Gardens, Portobello, Harbour Ferry, Octagon and Cathedral, Dunedin Train Station, Stewart Street Cable Car, Otago University Clock Tower, Otago Boys High, Evansdale river scenes, and North East Valley. Exhibition photos show the Exhibition Buildings, the grand court water feature, 'Maori House', and Amusement Park 'The Three Castles' (including the entrance and the 'Ye Old Mill River Caves' roller coaster and 'Giant's Mouth' rides). - Album also covers a January 1928 North Island road trip in a Model T Ford, departing from Levin. Description: Recalls travelling from Blenheim to Onehunga with her family at about the age of five, probably in 1895. Describes how the family went to Rotorua where her father, Mr Penney, became town clerk. Talks about how they drew a block of land for a farm at Hamurana. Mentions the coaching company of Carr and Walker which had three hundred horses and very big coaches. Recalls Sunday School picnics and the carnivals of 1903, 1904 and 1905. Describes how she worked at the Bathhouse and also became a dressmaker. Discusses the cobalt deficiency on their farm which eventually drove their family from the land during the Depression. Describes using a separator to separate cream from milk after milking. Describes how her uncle, Mr Brent, had a shop at Ohinemutu until the Tarawera eruption and then established Brent's Bathgate House. Mentions that her family stayed at her uncle's hotel many times. Recalls the marriage of her aunt, Laura Brent, to Mr Tripe on the death of her husband. Describes the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales, to Rotorua, his fear of the Maori challenge and going out the back door of the Grand Hotel to miss the crowds. Recalls meeting her husband, Wallace Benney, who got land at Kerepehi. Talks about their sons John and Stewart and her brothers and sisters Elsie, Olive, Dena, Vera, Dick and Jim.
