Interview with Queenie Rikihana Hyland

Description: Discusses family background and parents' marriage. Mentions her father was of Ngati Raukawa descent and her mother was Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai. Recalls childhood in Otaki; influence of father; use of Maori language; mother's love of reading; importance of church and spirituality; issue of the choice of Maori Anglican Bishop; education at Otaki Primary School which instilled a love of learning; then Otaki College where she decided to go into journalism. Talks about journalism school in Wellington and the influence of Christine Cole Catley who taught there; first job on the Wairarapa Times Age and then worked on the Dominion (mainly court reporting); covered Inia Te Wiata's funeral - talks about Te Wiata who was her uncle. Describes time running a burger bar to save up to go overseas; in London working as a journalist. Discusses move back to New Zealand where she became involved in setting up a kohanga reo in Rotorua; wrote features for the Listener; moved back down to the Kapiti Coast and started a Maori column in the Levin Chronicle; visited Canada through the film commission and was later on the board of Radio New Zealand; worked for Mana Maori News and then became involved with the Otaki Mail. Talks about establishment of a Maori newspaper for training students; Mana Maori Media and the future of Maori journalism. Also talks about her own marae and the building of new amenities there; cooking and food gathering, especially of kaimoana; being a member of the local runanga and its role. Description: Discusses interest in journalism which started when at Auckland University; completed a Diploma in Journalism at Wairakei Polytechnic which offered a Maori perspective which she found very useful; reasons for interest in journalism and her concerns about the portrayal of Maori in the media. Talks about job for Radio New Zealand in Hamilton; Maori network that developed from the Wairakei course and the difficulty they have faced in dealing with Maori events in a Pakeha sphere; conflict between being a professional journalist and being part of Maori community. Discusses move to Australia where she worked for the Australian Capital Territory Health Authority editing a public relations newspaper; used this experience at Manatu Maori as a communications manager when back in New Zealand; here informed other government departments how to target Maori effectively; network of Maori journalists that has flourished and the blossoming of parallel Maori media; resulting decline of Maori in the mainstream media. Talks about work with New Zealand Educational Institute (the primary teachers' union); sees her own future in a Maori media environment. Briefly outlines family background.
