Description: Ring binder storing photographs taken by Les Cleveland during his travel in New Mexico, United States, 2003 to 2004. Contains 35mm negative strips in sleeves and the corresponding contact sheets as well as handwriten notes on the content of the photographs, such as information on subjects such as locations and people, on interleaved pieces of notepaper. Photographs feature the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, the Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tortugas, and inscriptions on rocks at El Morro National Monument as well as towns such as Magdalena, Gallup, Pie Town, Pena Blanca, Taos, and Madrid. Also photographs taken on Central Avenue, Albuquerque. Subjects include shop clerks, cafes, gun shops, motels, cantinas, dwellings, theatres, mining machinery, sculptures by Michael Austin Wright, and landscapes and geographic formations. Chris Smith is identified, photographed with two children in a cafe. Trip to New Mexico dated based on photographic ephemera held in PAColl-10647-17. Title transcribed from item. Arrangement: Prints and negatives originally stored in a ring binder labelled "New Mexico 2004" on the spine. Quantity: 1 album(s) containing 50 b&w negative strips and eight contact sheets. Physical Description: 35mm film strips, contact sheets, and holograph notes. Processing information: Due to the high likelihood of the presence of PVC in the plastic covering of the original ring binder, the photographic materials were removed and placed in a new binder that met with the Library's conservation standards. The original binder has been disposed of. Not all names associated with this item have been indexed.

Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: John Michael L'Estrange born India 1942, of parents in exile from Burma. Gives some family background - father who was in British Burmese Army organised exodus of people of 'mixed blood' to India after Japanese occupation. Recalls returning to Burma after the war and attending Montessori school between 1945 and 1949 when family left Burma. Talks about education at St Benedicts in Auckland, Marist, Vermont Street and gaining a scholarship to Sacred Heart College. Discusses decision to enter Seminary, starting at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel for theology and later continuing studies in Rome where he was exposed to great ideas during Vatican II. Mentions discussions on celibacy, contraception etc. Recalls being sent as a priest to Huntly and talks about the difference between keeping tradition intact and adapting tradition to new needs. Mentions relationship of Catholic Church at that time with indigenous people. Refers to Pope John Paul who brought intellectual innovations to the Church but also brought in some conservative elements in terms of morality. Describes three years at Loretto Hall [Catholic teacher training college] lecturing in theology. Backgrounds decision to leave the priesthood and recalls obtaining a job with NZSCM (New Zealand Student Christian Movement) with aim to develop critical christian thinking on various aspects of life.
