Description: A large thatched storehouse (pataka) on four poles to the left, outside a fenced area containing three houses (one with a European-style slab chimney), and a smaller taller storehouse in a tree on the far right. A group of Maori outside the fence appear to be selling potatoes to a European. No. S97 in Richard S. Schneiderman's catalogue raisonne. State vi/vii. Other Titles - New Zealand. Native store-houses and dwellings at Akaroa. Banks Peninsula [translation] Collector's mark on recto, a stamped monogram with AM in a circle. (The same mark appears on B-014-003). Description: Brief and irregular journal entries from 28 Feb 1839 to 20 May 1841 describe life on ship, time spent in Sydney and details of the New Zealand coastal trade. Included at the back of the journal is a vocabulary of Maori words (3 pages), and miscellaneous notes, drafts of letters and accounts kept by Robinson. Source of title - Supplied Robinson sailed from Liverpool for Australia on 28 Feb 1839 on the `Heber' to trade in cotton and other goods. After a brief sojourn in Sydney he sailed for the Bay of Islands, arriving at Kororareka on 15 Jan 1841. He was involved in coastal trading between Bay of Islands, Coromandel and the East Coast. Description: A single sheet calendar shows a picture by E Mervyn Taylor, of a group of Maori in traditional dress, conducting a bartering arrangement. The attached text sheet discusses pre-European times, ceremonial feasts, trival possessions, food, spare time pursuits, canoe builders, tattooing, property ownership, tohungas, exchange, the coming of the white man, tattooed heads, trade for muskets and land, British coinage. Description: Six-panelled account of Maori traffic with Europeans in mokomokai or dried heads, from 1770 (a head sold to Joseph Banks) to the 1830s and later. The trade was banned around 1831, but continued illegally These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Description: Shows a group of Maori travelling along a road or track. In front (at left) is a man walking, smoking a pipe, with a large woven kete on his back. Next on a white horse is a Maori woman also smoking a pipe, with a baby tied to her back. Behind the white horse is a grey foal. Then comes a brown horse carrying a pipe-smoking man and a small child standing on the horse's back behind him. Last comes a Maori man walking with a pig and a dog on leashes. Description: Two groups of French sailors assisted by Maori hauling fishing lines in from the sea at Kororareka (Russell). Other French sailors are chatting to Maori women. The accompanying text from LaPlace's text (Volume 4 p. 46) describes the local Maori as being importunate in attempting to acquire powder, shot and biscuits from the sailors; and all the local young women distracting the sailors from their fishing by running in front of them. The view looks along the beach to the west, to bush-clad hills beyond. LaPlace was in New Zealand at the Bay of Islands in October 1831. Other Titles - Kororareka Beach, New Zealand.
