Description: Volume contains handwritten recipes compiled by Mrs Beard and written down in her journal. Includes recipes for ratafia biscuits, royal pudding, French honey, scrambled eggs, lemon sponge, lemonade, tapioca cream, arrowroot pudding, peach jelly, raspberry vinegar, Turkish delight, dainty cakes, hop beer, tomato sauce, fig jams, hunter's beef broth, chutney and pie melon jam. Also recipes for traditional medicines including cough mixture and gargle for sore throats. Instructions for making saddle polish and a newspaper cutting of handy household hints. The remainder of the journal includes notes on the height and weight of family members, address lists and an epitaph from the Bible "Here lies an old woman who always was tired..." Description: Mainly diaries and inward correspondence from her husband, relations and friends including Flora Acland, 1879-1885; Fanny Bagot, 1875-1876; her grandmother, F. A. Dicken, 1879; sister Ada Dicken, 1876-1899, Beatrice `Bebe' Knight, 1899, and Eleanor Inman, 1873-1899; Emma Packe, n.d.; her aunt Augusta Parker, 1875-1889; and Amelia Soder, 1885; referring to domestic events. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Description: Two memoranda books include details of expenses for building a cottage, a bakers oven in 1862, rents received (1865-1866), accounts for family's shoes (1867), journey to Hokitika 19-30 October 1865 and recipes There is also a miners right issued to George Innes, Tuapeka (September 1861) and a manuscript of business notes (1860-1866) which includes costing of material in construction of brick house, Cashel Street (1863) and record of work done There is also a copy of Wellington Girls College Reporter, Jubilee number (May 1933) George Innes was a builder who lived at various times in Hokitika, Otago and Christchurch. Description: Recipe book, begun in 1782, and with later recipes added. The recipes include instructions on making soap and medicines as well as food. Contains index at front. Includes newspaper cuttings of recipes from ca 1858, sketches of buildings and copies of some correspondence, the most recent of which is dated as 1947. The cuttings are from Wanganui newspapers. Many of the pages are encrusted with mud, possibly caused by one of the many floods which have occurred in Blenheim. Source of title - Supplied by Library Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Mss, in several hands Provenance: Given to the donor by an elderly friend, E B Gilberd of Stokes Valley, in 1980s. The original owners appear to have lived in Blenheinm and Wanganui.

Description: Journal relates primarily to verse, songs and recipes collected by Sapper Castles whilst a prisoner of war. Material includes "The Island of Doomed Men (Crete)" and "The Face on the Bar Room Floor". Amongst the recipes are instructions for making Guinness stout and cheese fritters. Also addresses of fellow prisoners, miscellaneous philiosopical jottings and epigrams. Some entries are written in French and German. Source of title - Supplied by Library Sapper Castles served with the Royal NZ Engineers, 7th Field Company and was captured on Crete, 1st June 1941. Description: A cookery book, and other papers. The cookery book contains handwritten recipes in an excerise book, and belonged to Mrs G Te Whaiti. Other papers include a letter written by the Bishop of Wellington to G H Te Whaiti (George), 3 Dec 1942. It may relate to George's contribution surrounding a Private Member's bill relating to the Papawai Kaikokirikiri Trust. Also includes some clippings of photographic portraits, a clipping of a photograph of a Ratana band and orchestra, a clipping relating to a service held in Lower Hutt in memory of Lieutenant-Colonel E T W Love, and a wedding invit Transfers: To Cartographic Collection - 15 (approx) maps - To Photographic Archive - 300 (approx) photographs - From Photographic Archive - Two lots of material were transferred back to the Manuscripts section in January 2015, from the Photographic Archive. Quentin Hooper Smith - Te Pa (Waitahora)

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Quentin Hooper Smith accompanied by supporting land documents; history of land ownership, recipe for Emma Hooper Smith's Christmas cake; photographs of farm and family Te Pa comprises 2 sections, one that formed part of the Education Reserve and the other balloted in 1902. Samuel Hooper Smith bought the latter in 1903, at which time it was named Loch Catherine. He renamed the farm Hyndhope and went into partnership with Mrs Ida Lane of Chesterhope in 1907. The 1200 acre Education reserve section (Te Pa) was managed by Samuel for William Nelson from 1901 to 1903 (until he bought Hyndhope). The name Te Pa had by this time come to denote the amalgamated properties. In 1907 Samuel and Mrs Lane bought `Te Pa' for £3000. The partnership lasted until 1924 when Samuel took it over. His son Eion took over the property after WWII, later passing to his son Quentin. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
