Flock House (Homestead)

Estate of over 3000 acres. Located on Parewanui Road, Parewanui (14 kilometres out of Bulls). Owned by Lyn McKelvie. In 1907 purchased 'Poyntzfield' from the McKenzie family and was amalgamated into the Flock House estate. In 1908 Lyn McKelvie contracted the Wanganui based firm Russell & Bignell to construct a homestead on the property. In 1923 it was bought for The NZ Sheepowners' Acknowledgment of Debt to British Seamen Fund, and administered by that body to train children of men of the Merchant Service and Royal Navy who died in WWI. An early adminstrator was Col Charles Guy Powles. The property was later taken over by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. [Source: Otaki Historical Society Journal Vol 3 1980]. Railways album 10

Description: Album of publicity photographs, taken by unidentified photographers, chiefly in 1935 At the beginning of the album there are a large number of photographs of the buildings, and crowds at a race meeting at the Trentham Racecourse. (See article by O.N. Gillespie in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue, 12, March 1, 1935). The album has many publicity photographs, designs for railway advertisements and posters, all showing the advantages of travel by rail. The advertisements include methods for travel savings: `Buy travel stamps. Travel savings N.Z.R. 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, from railway stations & booking offices'; also `Start saving to-day for your trip away...'. Other posters advertise cheaper travel in the off-season, including summer holidays at the Hermitage, with low combined rail and motor fares" as well as advertising full season trips to tourist destinations. There is one photograph of a programme [?] for "New Zealand Authors' Week, 1936. Souvenir". Near the start of the album there is a large group of views at Flock House, agricultural college at Bulls. They show pig farming, dairy cows, sheep, lucerne for pasture and vegetable growing (See New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue 12, March 1, 1935); and in one of these Lord Bledisloe is bending down examining pasture (See New Zealand Railways magazine, Vol. 9, Issue 11, February 1, 1935) There are a few individual and group portraits, but only one or two are identified. Interior photographs of Union Steam Ship Company luxury liners Rangatira and Aorangi, are shown as individual pictures, as well as in a montage (published in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 10, issue 4, July 1, 1935). Description: John Bell (Jack) Brotherston born Belfast, Ireland. Outlines family background - one of 11 children of whom six died, reference to flu epidemic (1918). Recalls: childhood and education system in Northern Ireland; bible class and importance of religious influence in Northern Ireland; discipline and medicine every Saturday; work experience in the linen factory and later Harland Wolff's Shipyard as Catchboy. Recalls coming to New Zealand 1924 under Flock House (Farm Training) Scheme and working as a shepherd until the depression when he moved to catering business. Talks about World War II service, joining Air Force (1940) as a chef at Rongotai and Woodbourne - was in charge of catering for overseas construction unit, spending 2 years in Fiji. Recalls compiling manual for School of cookery and by end of war was in charge of catering for Air Force. Discusses his post war catering work: The California, Belenheim (1945) and another California restaurant in Wanganui (1946) with reference to introducing Saratoga chips. Describes Palm Lounge, a catering business for private functions which he established and ran successfully for 21 years. Backgrounds involvement with IHC (New Zealand Society for the Intellectually Handicapped Inc.) with reference to Joe Ashton who was President of Wanganui Branch. Describes Alma Gardens. Explains IHCPA (Intellectually Handicapped Childrens' Parents' Association). Joe Ashton describes first involvement with IHC (1957) and explains what help was available for his son who was intellectually handicapped. Mentions workshops, educational facilities and explains how all parents were involved in fundraising. Reference to workers, Mavis Clark, and Nora Pearson. Pat Ashton recalls joining IHC as a parent (1968) and mentions son, Gregory. Recalls that greatest need as a parent was knowledge and mentions lack of help from medical profession.
