Also included are scenic views; scenes of mustering and shearing on the farm; Ernie and others in First World War uniforms; a burned down house; soldiers at Trentham camp eating a meal outside their tent (as a postcard signed by George McDermott to his brother and sister Alice and Bill); Lorraine Barnes taking part in a recording of the radio show The Quiz Kids as a member of the Hutt Valley team (The Quiz Kids was introduced by Selwyn Toogood in the 1950s); results of a national election being monitored on a wall chart ca 1930s; Ernie Barnes as captain of the Wellington Telephone Exchange Cricket Club; and two of officers and soldiers from the Second World War. Description: Berwyn Jones born Bargoed, Glamorganshire, South Wales 1922. Describes family background, school life, involvement in Church, the Local Defence Volunteers, Army cadetship at Pontypridd and joining the Army in 1943, training at Formby, north of Liverpool. Recalls posting to East Africa six months before war ended, time in Nairobi followed by Somalia and then Ethiopia where the military commission was trying to help the Ethiopian army enter the modern world. Describes large workshop in Mogadishu (Somalia). Mentions being demobbed 1947. Backgrounds decision to emigrate to New Zealand, arriving January 1955, taking up a position in Dunedin with the Otago Hospital Board. Notes that at that time the Otago Hospital Board was the only teaching hospital in the whole of New Zealand. Discusses the formation of the Coal Advisory Service Association and becoming its first Director, a position held for five years. Mentions moving to position with Ministry of Works, remaining until retirement aged 60 years. Recalls joining the Welsh Society in 1961 and refers to Mr and Mrs Jesson. Also refers to various places used for meetings and to the English Speaking Union which was used as a venue for Saint David's Day for several years. Refers to Gwyn Owen, a bank officer with ANZ, who was President in the 1970s and into the 1980s. Mentions Roma Howard from Upper Hutt, Peter Fairfax, and Miss Ives who had been housekeeper to Sir David Smith, a judge in the High Court.
