Date: 2010
From: Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :Digital cartoons
Reference: DCDL-0015832
Description: Labour leader Phil Goff makes a speech in which he vows that a Labour government will put a stop to the sale of land to foreigners because he does not consider it to be in the best interests of New Zealand. He adds that foreign ownership of utilities, electric companies, airports and railways will also be limited. TVNZ Breakfast show host Paul Henry comments ironically that he is called a racist. The Little Evans commentator says 'It sounds like Winston!' Refers to the 'growing political debate over foreign ownership of land [that] could put investors off New Zealand as a place to do business, lobby groups are warning'. Finance Minister Bill English said the Government would "increase ministerial flexibility" when considering applications for foreign investment, in particular for large-scale ownership of farmland. Labour leader Phil Goff said a Labour government would welcome foreign investment but with strict controls and strings attached. He signaled that the party would "turn the rules on selling land to foreigners on their head", promising "most" applications from foreign buyers would be rejected. The Greens say 'Selling off New Zealand owned businesses and land would mean more foreign ownership and less accountability to what's best for New Zealanders. It'd also mean more profits shifting offshore. We say "Keep it Kiwi"'. Both colour and black and white versions of this cartoon are available Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

From: Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :Digital cartoons
Reference: DCDL-0015833
Description: A posse of irate farmers has arrived at parliament dragging a large cannon with which they intend to 'cannonise Phil Goff'. Refers to Phil Goff's saying that a Labour government would welcome foreign investment but with strict controls and strings attached. He signalled that the party would "turn the rules on selling land to foreigners on their head", promising "most" applications from foreign buyers would be rejected. There is possibly a reference to the canonisation of Australia's Mary MacKillop. Both colour and black and white versions of this cartoon are available Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
Land sales - "How much?" 27 August 2010
Date: 2010
From: Brockie, Robert Ellison, 1932- :Digital caricatures and cartoons
Reference: DCDL-0015446
Description: A man representing China stands centreframe asking 'How much?' as he looks at a mountainous and sunny New Zealand landscape and in his mind's eye sees it converted to a New Zealand covered in high rise buildings from North Cape to the Bluff. Refers to Chinese interest in New Zealand farms particularly the 16 farms in the failed Crafar empire. Interestingly the government seems to have baulked at Chinese investment but $80 billion in Kiwi assets are owned by Australian interests to date and there are many European buyers. Most other countries have much tighter controls over foreign investment than New Zealand. No Kiwi company can buy land in China, for example. It can be leased but not bought.
