Description: The records contain minute books, financial records, letter books, inward correspondence and cables. Maps and plans of stations and runs are also featured. Source of title - Title transcribed The New Zealand and Australian Land Company has operated in New Zealand and Australia longer than any other land company, its directors first convening in 1862. Many large properties had been purchased in both countries by the late 1860's though most of its holdings today are in Australia. The Company played a leading part in establishing the frozen meat industry in New Zealand as well as in sheep breeding. Quantity: 93 microfilm reel(s). Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Lindsay Tait Johnston; history of the Johnston families of Waikaka Valley; land documents; extract from book re 1874 & 1875 land sales (p 14); photographs The original owner was Adam Dickson Johnston who purchased 200 acres in 1874 in the Waikaka Valley, 8 km from Gore. In 2005 the property was owned by his great-grandson Lindsay Johnston and wife Valda. In the intervening years further land was added to the initial block making a total of 536 acres. It was awarded the NZ Century Farm & Station award to mark 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Lindsay John Gerrard - Acrestripe, Winton

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Lindsay John Gerrard; extracts from book relating to Alexander Gerrard; copy of page from family Bible; story of Gerrard family & Acrestripe (draft copy); land documents Alexander Gerrard, wife Mary (nee Philip) and four children arrived in Winton in 1866. They bought a block of land in the West Winton Hundred and built their first home. In the years that followed 5 more children were born. A few years later Alexander bought an additional 629 acres of land at Aparima. He farmed cattle and sheep, and grew wheat. As a wedding present Mary Gerrard was presented with 16 Border Leicester sheep by her father when she left Scotland. Up until 1958 the blood line of these 16 ewes was still on the home farm although new Border Leicester rams had been brought in. In 1953 a new flock of stud Border Leicester ewes was purchased and the new stud was named Acrestripe. In 2005 the last Border Leicester ewe (born in 1994) with the Acrestripe stud tag was sent to the works. In 1976 Lindsay John Gerrard purchased the original home farm from his father Irvine Alexander (Lex) Gerrard. In 2005 he was farming the 115 hectare property with his wife Judith (nee Warren) breeding ewes and hoggets and sire rams, and deer. See also Burtenshaw, May. From castle to cave. Description: Patrick Henaghan outlines his family background - grandparents came from Ireland and bought farm at Waiata. Joan was born in Palmerston North, the daughter of a salesman and real estate agent. Recalls boarding school at Silverstream and mentions caning. Describes the physical nature of farming in his father's day and his father's early death. Talks about shearing and docking sheep. Describes his mother's hard work feeding shearers. Mentions death duties which had to be paid on his father's death in 1959 and the need for Pat to take over the farm rather than go to Massey. Discusses his interest in innovation in farming including the breeding of ewes which are able to lamb unassisted and rotational grazing (mob stocking). Talks about the effect of the removal of subsidies in 1984, farm amalgamation and an improved awareness of the land among farmers which has meant the planting of more trees and reduced use of chemicals. Joan describes the part she plays on the farm and bringing up three daughters who have developed a great feeling for the farm.
