Description: Diary of an unknown embarkation officer, serving on the troop transport `Empress of Japan', which sailed from Wellington on 26 Apr 1940 and arriving at the Firth of Clyde on 16 Jun. At Capetown he was reassigned to the `Empress of Canada' an Australian troop transport. Describes and comments on his fellow officers, their activities, behaviour of the troops, his wife and new-born son, and the ports visited on the voyage. Description: Photographs of Featherston Military Camp in the Wairarapa, taken circa 1916 by an unidentified photographer. Comprises scenes with soldiers and views of the camp grounds. 1. Five soldiers and their equipment pose informally in their semi-erected tent, which has square perimeter of stones laid around it. Two and possibly three hold the rank of sergeant. 2. A group of soldiers, armed and with slouch hats, pose informally, possibly during a miltary exercise. A sergeant to the right of the group appears to be in command. 3. A general view of the layout of Featherston Camp. There appears to be snow on the ground. 4. Seven soldiers in the camp hold a snowball fight after a heavy snowfall. 5. A soldier in a 'lemon squeezer' hat poses before two of the camp huts. There is snow on the ground. 6. A squad of soldiers drills before an officer. To the left of the squad is a telegraph pole. 7. A company with rifles on a march-past in the camp. 8. Troops line up at an outdoor canteen. 9. Soldiers marching with their equipment past the camp huts. The donor thinks that her father-in-law Gordon Harcourt was at Featherston Military Camp during WWI, so they may have originally belonged to him.
