One rowing boat has a rowing team in rowing outfits, and some near boats contain ladies with parasols. The setting may be Auckland Harbour, with North Head seen in the right background. South African war album

Description: Photographs of the North Island Regiment of the New Zealand Army 8th Contingent in preparation for leaving on the troopship Surrey to fight in the South African War. These photographs were taken by Alfred Jones & Co. mostly in Auckland. They include views of speeches by Richard John Seddon, and General Babington in Auckland., and the departure of the Surrey from Auckland. Other images show the Surrey in Wellington Harbour, rowing eights in the harbour and the Contingent's military camp in Newtown. Two views show warships in Wellington Harbour and a decorated gateway in the city for the Duke of York's visit to New Zealand. There are a number of views of the processions and ceremonies for the funeral of Cecil Rhodes in Cape Town. Richard Seddon's visit to the Hudson's Soap Works in Liverpool is shown in several photographs taken by an unidentified photographer. Page 45 shows a "review at Pretoria" at which there was a "presentation of V.C.s and also a Royal Humane Society medal to Sergt. Cassidy N.Z.M.R. by Lord Roberts". The information is hand-written over the photograph as a Christmas greeting. Inserted in an envelope is a sheet of paper with the signatures of "Colonel Wyndham and the Officers of the Imperial Representative Corps". (Colonel Wyndham was with the 21st Lancers). Description: Photographs of the Nelson Region, Wellington Harbour, Featherston, Ruamahanga Valley and the Rimutaka Hill Road, probably taken by George William Barltrop in 1899 (Identification from other albums in this sequence). None of the people in photographs are identified, but include several scenes with a woman and her husband; a group portrait at a wedding; two older women in a garden; a picnic group (6 women, one man and three children); two women carrying baskets of plants, with a man wheeling a bicycle (on the road to the Nelson Reservoir); and three young boys in a garden. A sequence of twelve photographs includes two men, members of the 2nd Contingent, at a military camp (possibly in the Nelson area), preparing to leave for the South African War, in 1899; rows of horses near tents at the camp; soldiers marching; a Nelson street with a banner reading `For Queen and country. Description: Photograph album presented to George William Barltrop by Herbert Spackman of Rintoul Street, Wellington. Includes a letter attached inside the front cover which reads in part "Dear Mr Barltrop, Please accept the accompanying photo album as a small acknowledgement of the very valuable help you have so very generously afforded me in my early struggles in amateur photography...". Photographs are all of the Wellington area, and were probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first group of images show the process of inserting a middle section, thus enlarging St Thomas's Anglican Church in Newtown. Several views of Taita are followed by a group portrait of a man and two boys seated in a garden, wearing church vestments; and a woman also seated in a garden reading a book. The following sequence is chiefly related to The Wellington branch of The Missions to Seamen, and include two views of a cemetery in which a close view of a headstone commemorates the loss of Andrew Hughson (drowned aged 27, when lost overboard from the SS Takapuna in May 1899), and Captain Brewer, the officers and crew of the SS Ohau which foundered in the same storm. There is a photographic image of a receipt from the Missions to Seamen, Wellington, for 12 pounds, received from "Members of the City Police"; and a number of group portraits of Missions to Seamen picnics, the group in each case carrying the Missions banner. c Two views show steamships in Wellington harbour, and one is of a group of soldiers on the wharf in Wellington, prearing to embark for the South African War, with members of the public watching the parade. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Album of photographs taken in 1901 by Lieutenant William Fletcher Wallis during his service in the South African War (1899-1902) with Sixth New Zealand Mounted Rifles. One image showing Wallis was taken by an unknown photographer. Album probably compiled by Wallis. Images show various subjects, including: - Scenes aboard the steamship Cornwall transporting the 6th Contingent to South Africa, including pistol practice, horses in stables on deck, washing on line, soldiers relaxing in deck chairs, and arrival in Table Bay - Soldiers standing in line or posing informally with rifles and bandoliers. Also Africans attached to the New Zealand Contingent as labourers or scouts. - Blockhouses of various kinds - Soldiers marching and riding horses in columns across the veldt, and being transported in open train wagons - Scenes on the veldt and at encampments, including soldiers resting, washing, repairing equipment, butchering animals, having dental work, firing artillery, shoeing horses, and breaking in horses. Also wide views of encampments. - Regimental sports such as tug of war, bareback mule wrestling, and high jump. One image captioned "What are they doing?" may show soldiers gambling. - Zulu people in villages. One image shows the weaving of a hut. - Signalling using heliographs - Combat scenes with field artillery and pom-pom guns (QF 1 pounder) being fired by the Royal Artillery - Mounted soldiers burning Boer houses, escorting prisoners and refugees, and dead livestock - War graves, including that of Sergeant Major Sidney Smith, who is shown alive in several previous images - General Plumer riding across a stream and consulting with staff - William Fletcher Wallis riding in rickshaw with a `Lieut. Wood' in Durban Numbers appear on all the prints, but their significance is not known. Many of the photographs have captions, some illegible. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Front cover - "Boer War. South Africa. 1901" and "Taken by Lieut Wallis. 6th N.Z.M.R."
