Runholder of Canterbury. `In 1864, Cornishman John Grigg bought up about 800 ha of "impassable swamp" extending from the Ashburton River to the Hinds, and 11 km inland from the coast. Over the years Grigg converted this peat, silt and clay into productive farm, the celebrated "Longbeach Station". Grigg was one of the pioneers of the frozen meat export industry in NZ.'
